Wrong section. Repost this under the Concealed carry section or the general handgun section and you will get some good info.

Are you looking to stay with a 9mm?

    A Springfield XD9 Compact or Sub-compact should be around $500. +/-

A new Stoeger Cougar is in that price range, which is actually a Turkish built Beretta Cougar if you are loyal to the brand.
There's also a Beretta 8045 that's a Cougar chambered in .45 ACP. I had one and it was a very good pistol.
(The Cougar line is all compacts)

I haven't handled one, but the Bersa Thunder 9 comes in under $400.

If you're willing to buy something used, $500. will get you a pretty wide variety of pistols in 9mm.

    Something sub compact under $500???
Any Keltec, Taurus 709, Taurus 24/7 Subcompact, Taurus Millenium, Bersa Thunder 380, Besra Thunder Ultracompact, Ruger LCP, CZ-83, Kahr CW...
Have you ever considered a revolver?...
Taurus 85UL, Rossi 351, Charter Undercover, Taurus 850CIA, Taurus 605, Ruger SP101, some S&W snubbies can be found under $500 too...

I would go with a single stack. I carry a Kahr PM9. New is over your amount. I paid $595 for mine . Used is very hard to find but I have seen them out there. The Kahr CW9 is a good choice and new it's around $440.

I, too, carry the PM9. I got it used for around $500. However, there are so many little things you have to buy to carry a gun every day that you may want to consider the KelTec PF9. It is very light. NutNFancy gives it great reviews on YouTube. And you can still purchase a few boxes of ammo and a holster for $500.

Used, though, might be the best idea for $500.

Your logic is sound in considering the total package of cc to be at $500.
If I were to look at that route I would go with the much more reliable and accurate Kahr CW9:

    Kahr CW9 ................................................. $ 440
High Noon IWB Bare Asset Holster...................$ 24.99
Levi 1.5 inch belt -Plenty good for the weight...$ 9.99
    box 25 Hornady Critical Defense round.............$ 22

    Total...........$496.98
This is my set up...Just substitute a CW9

Of course it would face the opposite direction behind the belt ( wanted to show the full holster shot )

Does it need to be an autoloader?

    What about a wheel gun?

    Ruger LCR <$400.

Love that LCR. I've never fired it, never touched one, even. But the reviews are great and I'd love to get a revolver. Before I bought my first, the LCR was definitely at the top of my list. But now after carrying around at least 7, sometimes 16, rounds before reloading, just 5 feels underprepared.

I know that almost every real situation could be dealt with by even less than 5 rounds. I'm only talking my own psychology, here.

But the LCR is a GREAT option. And .38 special is nothing to sneeze at ballistically.

I love my CW9, but remember that it only comes with 1 magazine. They cost $35-40. I paid $418 back in August.

Thanks Tommy... I'm not familiar with the 990L I believe it's on the same tier as S&W's Sigma. If so you can get a sigma for $100 less. I would stay away from the Glock 29 If I'm not mistaken they are 10mm. That would be a B***H trying to get ammo for.

    Kahr PM 9

Doubt you'll stay under 500 but if your flexible up to 6 look at the Kahr PM9. Ultra thin, 6 plus 1 and an extended 7rnd back up mag, all tucked into a belly band rig which ran 15 bucks and beats the snot out of all my 80 dollar holsters.
You get 9mm power, which IMO is a minimum, and you can wear it all day without knowing it's there. Been carrying for 12 years and it's the best combination of price, comfort, firepower, and concealablity I've ever found. You could go with a Kel Tec or a Taurus for half the price but if you compare there triggers with the Kahr, you'll gladly wind up paying more for it.
    Hope that helps.:)
