Stumbled upon a S&W model 10-5 on Saturday at my LGS. The price tag said $399.99. I handled it, fondled it a bit. Generally drooled over it. Told the clerk I was sort of a sucker for classic S&W wheel guns. He said, "Tell ya what, I'll do $415 out the door for you. That'll give me about a $40 profit on that gun."

I told him I was tempted. Kept handling it and salivating over it. After a few minutes, he said, "You know what, I'll do $400 even. Cut all the taxes off of it." I told him he's gonna make my wife hate me because of buying another gun that really wasn't on our list.

I handed the gun back after a bit, said, "lemme call my wife and see what she has to say. In the mean time, I don't wanna dirty it up." Called up the wife, she told me she doesn't have to give me permission to buy guns (I've got a heck of a woman!) and she could never be mad at me for buying a gun. So we decided to do it.

Told the guy I was down. Buy I didn't have my orders on me which make me a Texas resident. I asked him if he could hold it until Monday afternoon (remember, this was about fifteen minutes before their close on Saturday and they aren't open on Sundays). He said he could.

The rest is history. Sorry for the poor photos. They don't do this gun justice. I would put it at at least a 90% condition. Probably better. There is a tiny amount of cosmetic imperfection here or there. But nothing catastrophic. Locks up beautifully, doesn't seem to have any signs of improper use, and has one of the smoothest DA triggers I've ever felt.

Needless to say this beauty has a new home.

Looks to be a 3" model. The serial number is C84XXXX, which according to the below link puts it out in 1966-1967.

Congratulations to both of you- those are VERY nice!

JW- unless I miss my guess, that is a 4 incher. Think the 3 inch has a shorter ejector rod, like the 2 inchers (which can screw up fully ejecting a fired case)

One of the LGS's around here has a 10-6 for $440. Very tempted, but I'm holding out or a 19.

You're probably right. I tried the ole knuckle measuring method. Came up with 3". But I could just have large fingers.

I have the 19's stainless brother, the 66. I love it. Its my favorite gun right now (that I own). But I haven't shot my 10 yet. We'll see which I like more. Truth be told it'll prolly be a toss up.

    Good luck to you!

Very nice JW. I only have 1 Smith now, but could easily get carried away if they were in front of me, and I had cash in my pocket.
And a good price, too. Seems the S&Ws and Colts are starting to skyrocket. Get 'em while you can.

Oh, you are going to grind it down and nickel plate it, then add some MOP grips, right?

    Thanks guys.

And DrFootball, like I said the pics don't do it justice. I believe it certainly has been babied. There's barely a cylinder line on it.

Good for you man. It takes work to find a good used Gun at a Fair price. Few months back we were up In Winslow( Steel Talon warned me to be careful and not go "Native!!:) for the "Standin on a corner " festival( all Eagles cover tune bands, and all the stores were playing Eagles+ Henley & Frey solo stuff. Walked I to the pawn shop just to see what they had(22LR was $12 a box!!) and my wife's SP101 that she got for $400 in April of 12, was $599. Simply amazing.

If I ran into an SP101 in 4" for $400 I would probably snag it up. My wife and I shot one back in Kali and it was... saaweeeet!

Hers is the 2.25" Stainless in 357. We have about 1700 38/357's for her currently, but only about 300 Mag. Rounds and about 250 more in 38+P. The rest are various sizes of FMJ, SWC, and DEWC's for practice. She's also back and forth on a Smaller carry gun, the Rugers( hers and my late Dad's ) are way to heavy and big for her to carry unless we need her to. She's between a Ruger LCR-x, the Charter UC, or the Taurus M85 or 605 poly.

Got to shoot our new 10-5 today. She's a sweet gun. Only put 100 rounds through her (50 Remington 130 grs and 50 Winchester white box). Really pleasant to shoot. I wasn't expecting any differently considering its a .38 Special in a relatively heavy gun.

I haven't shot pistols in a couple months so my fundamentals weren't where they should be. But I believe this gun shoots to POA, as it should, when I focused on my fundamentals.

Fun gun. I'm glad I purchased it, even though it was a completely spur of the moment buy.
