Load Data

    Why is there a variance between load data sheets.

    Reloading 9 mm 147 gr jacketed bullets with Winchester WSF propellant.

    Hodgdon / Winchester web sits says starting load is 4.0 and max load is 4.4 gr.

    Lyman load data sheet says starting load is 3.5 to 4.4.

    Shouldn't all load data sheets be the same?

    They use different test set ups. That's why you start low and work up.

    Everything is different, different lot numbers, different test barrels/firearm, different bullets, different seating depths, etc.etc.

    As above, that's why that have a "Start" charge and a "Max" charge
    and why we start low and work up. Load data is NOT a recipe only a guideline, to many variables to be a Recipe.

    Ok,

    Lets say hypothetically, that the only load data I had was the Lyman and started with 3.5 grains.

    If I shoot the reloads in my 9 mm pistol all is well but if I then try to shoot them through my 9mm rifle is there not a possibility that there may not be enough energy for the bullet to exit the barrel?

    There will be enough energy to exit the barrel, but quite possibly not enough to cycle the action.

    The liability issue also rears it's ugly head.

    The larger manufacturers don't want you

    reloading for some cracked Jiminez or Bersa,

    and suing them later.

    The holy grail is the lowest weight of powder

    which is accurate, and will cycle your gun.
