Hang a brightly colored string with a small weight on the end on your fence in your back yard. Set up a table with your rest and rifle and using a small bubble level, make sure the bore of your rifle is perfectly level. Now, look through the scope and rotate the scope in your rings until the vertical line on your reticle either covers or is parallel to the string. Check, check again, and then when you are all done, re check it. And torque your scope rings evenly!

I level the gun in a gun vise, and line up the crosshairs with a plumbline that I hang in front of the gun.

    It works great,every time.

Yep, this is the best method. You can't beat gravity! Some reticles aren't aligned perfectly with the tubes anyway, so I thinks it's more important to be aligned with true verticle anyway. This method has never let me down.
