As an Illinois resident, this one strikes close to home. However, forget about responsible citizens of Illinois being able to defend themselves. We don't even have concealed carry here, unlike most of the rest of the country. Much less being able to carry in a place like a university. That is why these a-holes pick these places, nobody is armed. Gee, how about next time this happens the news media just hold a parade for the shooter, which is practically what they do now, and talk about all the details of the event so the next nut job will get some good ideas, so he can be famous too. Oh, poor shooter, he (fill in the blank) ....was off his meds, was dissed by someone, he's angry at the world, mommy didn't hold him enough, he didn't get an X-box for Christmas, or whatever excuse the news people will use to make us feel sorry for the shooter. Can you even imagine the trouble the student would be in if, he or she, was packing a legally owned handgun, even if being carried illegally so he or she had some sort of peace of mind, and actually took care of a shooter before anyone was killed. The student would be arrested and prosecuted for illegal carry, and carrying on university grounds, probably some sort of manslaughter, and would probably be sued by the shooter if he lived or by the family of the shooter if he was killed. And then they would have a felony on their record, and this would preclude this person, who saved lives because they had a gun, would no longer be able to legally own a firearm. What a great system we have.

This is one of the reasons I found it so hard to believe how different things were once we decided to settle down here. Took Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Illinois Drivers License, (which the state took), and fourth piece of ID to prove who I was before Florida would accept who I was. (Trust me, I appreciated it.) Up in Illinois, you walk in with a Drivers License, (which could easily be phony), and they'll give you anything you want). Wonder now why folks in Illinois can't have weapons? They could be anybody.

As someone who use to live in Northern Illinois, I find this extensively redundant. As it already stands, you can't even carry a weapon there. If you want to buy a shotgun, it takes an act of congress- literally. The citizens of the state, along with the rest of the U.S. need to stand up and retrieve the original intent to bare arms. The politicians need to understand that Chicago is a town, and doesn't reflect the standing of the whole state. I pray that the state laws will eventually lapse back about 100 years, allowing responsible citizens to bare arms again.

so you can buy a gun in Illinois, but you can't carry it?
How does this law get signed? There is a country, I can't think of what one right now, but they outlawed the rights to own firearms, everyone had to turn in there guns to the authorities. Guess what? Gun crimes went up.

so the Second Amendment does not apply to Illinois?
You guys need to vote a gun supporter into office, and change that law.

No you just can't walk in a gun shop with a driver's license and get anything you want in Illinois. You have to have what is called a FOID card. (Firearm Owner's I D) It is issued by the State Police after a background check. It is good for 5 years and is required for ammo and gun purchases. On long guns, we have a 24 hr. waiting period, and 72 hour for handgun. Just wanted to set the record straight.

Sorry, I wasn't talking about weapons. I meant you could walk in with a Florida drivers license and get an Illinois drivers license. I never tried getting a weapon of any sorts up in Illinois. Didn't mean to confuse the issue.
