Do you have to be 21 to own a handgun, or just purchase one? i have a family friend that would like to pass down a handgun to me (gift it to me) and was wondering if i could even legally have it?

You could legally own a handgun while under 21 but cannot legally buy one (or perhaps possess one in public) in most jurisdictions. As long as you kept it at home you SHOULD be OK.

Check local restrictions (as Mark said).

In Arizona,

You can legally own a handgun while between the ages of 18-20.

You just cannot purchase one from an FFL Dealer.

Face to face sale of a handgun to someone 18 or older is legal, here.

And if you are 18 and own a handgun, you may open carry

I don't know about YOUR local laws though.

I wouldnt be able to tell you, and I'm too lazy to look up your states laws (even though I'm a pro at it living in MA and such). Look it up online. You should be able to find such law. If you can't, ask your local PD.

Consult your local LEO.
If I may, I wouldn't contact just any cop that I happen to bump into. As odd as it may seem, many cops have no idea what the gun laws are. You can make a call to the local county or state prosecutor's office, or local gun organizations. Google is your best place to start.
