Tactics, Tips And Procedures To Prevent and Deal With Violent Encounters
Part 1
Home invasion

I am a former Special Forces Soldier and defense industry security contractor.

I provide the information in this post in order to provide feedback to the readers regarding the TTPs employed by persons in their own defense.

This series does not provide information regarding the appropriate application of the use of force.

///////////////////////////

WOMAN FIRES AT HOME INTRUDERS

SUMMARY:
It appears that there are two persons occupying a home. One person (female) is sleeping downstairs, while the second person (male) is sleeping upstairs.

It also appears that three subjects enter the house illegally (according to news reports and the manner of their actions).

The occupants of the house react to this invasion.

VIDEO REVIEW

Time of the video is expressed as: hour : minute : seconds

00:00:00 – 00:00:38

A singular male appears in the bottom of the screen. This individual is wearing a white hoodie and seems to be cautiously advancing in an effort to identify items of value without waking the home occupants.

00:00:38
A second male appears in the bottom of the screen. This individual is wearing what appears to be a white knit cap and a dark jacket with white lettering on the back. He cautiously follows the first individual towards the top right of the screen.

00:00:59
A third male appears in the bottom of the screen. This individual is wearing a light colored knit cap with a darker ball on the top, a light colored long sleeve shirt and jeans. This individual follows the first two individuals into a room in the top right of the screen.

00:01:07
The video shows the male occupant of the house asleep in the upstairs bedroom.

00:01:15
One of the suspected home invaders comes back into the top right of the screen and apparently continues his search of the home for valuables. He moves across a hallway towards a room on the right side of the screen, however returns to the location of his accomplices.

00:1:40
All three suspected home invaders come back on screen and move towards the low right side of the screen. There seems to be some discussion about where to go to continue their search.

00:02:16
Apparently somehow the female occupant of the house has awaken and has fired one shot at the intruders. There is debris falling from the top of the screen frame. I am not sure if this is where her initial round struck thus causing the debris to fall.

00:02:18
The female occupant of the house comes into full screen from the left upper part of the screen. She is at full extension with her handgun and is moving toward the direction of the intruders.

00:02:20
The female occupant of the house is now located at the base of the stairs and has fired multiple rounds at the intruders.

00:02:20 - 00:02:23
The female occupant of the house pauses in the open. She then makes the decision to turn on the lights. This decision potentially maintains her in an open, un-concealed and un-covered location.
SUGGESTION
1.
Return to the covered and concealed location in the room from which she came from and to notify law enforcement. Turning on the lights could allow the intruders to see her position as well as she could see theirs.
2. While turning on the lights, her gun is actually past what is referred to as the “threshold” of the hallway. Had there been an intruder there, the intruder could have fired upon her, or attacked the now visible gun and taken it from her.
3. There is an open doorway to her front a hallway to her left and a hallway or room to her right. This construction results in multiple danger areas that an intruder could possibly be occupying in wait. Even for a seasoned tactical team, this could be a nightmare to clear. Again, it might be worthwhile to conduct a tactical retreat to a “safe-haven” type of location or even to the room from which she came as opposed to exposing herself to 3 different danger areas.

00:02:26 -00:02:30
The female occupant moves towards the bottom right of the screen. Her movement at this time is smooth, flowing and confident.
SUGGESTION:
1. It may have been advisable to return to the covered and concealed location in the room from which she came from and to notify law enforcement.
2. If she were further attacked, the intruders would have had to come through channelization in order to get to her position.
3. This channelization would provide her with the tactical advantage.

SUMMARY TO THIS POINT
1. The female of the house seized and held the initiative in her defense.
2. She conducted a very hasty clear of certain danger areas. She is to be applauded for her bravery.

In second half of this video review I will break-down the rest of the actions of the home occupants. I will point out some "stress" points (as I refer to them) which in this case were dangerous events during the encounter and how to mitigate them. I will also point out some more of the sound tactical actions taken by the home dwellers.

TAKE-AWAY
1. The clearing of any structure is one of the most dangerous things that any well-trained individual or team will conduct in the tactical realm.
2. Law enforcement may not be available at the time that you need their expertise. A well thought out plan, well-rehearsed and tactically sound is paramount.
3. It is also something that I hope that no one who reads this series ever has to do. But if you do, I hope that these points assist you in this time.

ADDENDUM:

All personnel in this series are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
I do not have the final disposition of this case or any cases that appear in this series.
In no way do I condone nor condemn anyone's actions. I am simply pointing out tactical proficiencies and areas of potential improvement.

Nice. Thanks for sharing.
I find the caption/notes in each picture very useful. Particularly if one doesn’t have time to read the entire thread or one would like to share the advice (pictures) with friends and family.

What did she do right? She is going up against 3 intruders with a revolver with no light and I doubt she has a reload. She has expended at least half her ammo with poorly aimed or random shots. She has given up the high ground. She has exposed herself to attack. She should have called 911 and stayed at the top of the stairs.
Unless you have security cameras you have no idea how many intruders there are and what firearms they have. These days there could easily be a large number of intruders. When there are evacuations looters are showing up with trucks and armed guards.

Hello JTJ,

You make some valid points:

THINGS TO BE IMPROVED UPON:
1. The odds are 3:1. Those aren't great odds.
2. She has no light on her weapon.
3. It appears that she doesn't have a reload. This could be crucial. I discuss this point in my EDC series (Part-2 https://www.firearmstalk.com/threads/krieger_tactics-edc-part-2.149266/#post-2431090
4. It appears that she has expended half of her ammo and that they were not particularly well aimed shots. I think some of her rounds actually hit the ceiling.
5. She did expose herself by entering the open area. This was noted in the summary above.

CORRECTIONS and NOTES:
1. She actually came from the left side of the screen which appears to be a bedroom on the bottom floor, so technically she never had the high ground.
2. The video does not provide information as to whether or not she called the police. However, I would also advocate notifying the police

Most Importantly:

WHAT DID SHE DO RIGHT:
1. She made a decision to arm herself and she has REFUSED to ignore that there are bad persons out there that will target you, attack you, subdue you, rob you and KILL you.
2. If you would remember there was a murder recently of a mother and school teacher who went jogging (Clothing found in trash bag near where body of jogger Eliza Fletcher was discovered, police say) early in the morning. Apparently a certain vehicle passed her and then stopped. The mother continued to jog towards this vehicle. According to news reports a man exited the vehicle, attacked, kidnapped and killed the jogger. It would seem that there were many points ignored regarding the danger of jogging, alone during the hours of darkness. This usually occurs due to the individual refusing to or not being aware of the dangers of such an activity.

3. The woman in the video who (less than) arguably made several mistakes made one VERY IMPORTANT non-mistake; She realized that people will harm and kill you and she took (at least the basic) steps to avoid becoming a defenseless victim:

She armed herself and when confronted with attackers she ACTED.

There is a stark difference between the two cases:

One of the two persons noted apparently ignored the threat (that does exist) and she is dead.

The second of the two persons acknowledged that a real, persisted and deadly threat exists - She prepared for it, and addressed it (even if not so eloquently). And she is alive to learn from it and to do better should there be a next time.

I'd say she did enough of what was right in this case.

I would hope that we would all acknowledge the threat that does exist, prepare for it, learn from others and... should we be be faced with a threat to our lives that we would all have the courage that this young lady valiantly demonstrated.
