I can't decide between the k98 or the 91-30. If I get the mosin I plan to modernize it some. Sniper bolt - modern scope, bipod and ati synthetic stock. If I get the Mauser I will just get a scope rail. I plan to take it elk hunting.

Are there any companies that make expanding ammo for the mosin? Will soft point mushroom?

The Mauser 98 is a much nicer rifle hands down. There really is no comparison. It's like comparing a Volkswagen to a Cadillac. The Mauser will be more accurate and the rimless 8x57 cartridge is of a better design and a bit more powerful. IMO of course.

I prefer the 91/30 I think if built right they can be very accurate. I used some silver bear 203g soft point bullets to deer hunt last year and they worked great the deer went down fast.

A 98 mauser is closer to a hunting rifle from the beginning. Better adapted to mounting optics. Generally better triggers, not as long overall, for portability. Bolts are generally a bit smoother. The safety is better in design.

A 91/30 will get the job done, but the Mauser just seems better suited for it.

Agreed most commercial hunting rifles are of the mauser type design.and i tend to agree you can handload some pretty heavy hunting loads and buy top line match grade for the 8mm and get it in hornadys classic rifle, pvri ,s&b all reloadable .But cant beat a k98or the m24/47 Mauser .mosins are good rifles but long ,not as well designed ,and triggers are heavy with lots of creep in comparison and of coarse the awful saftey design of the mosin. That is just my opinion, also you will pay most time,s more for the mauser so how much do you want to spend?and reloading the 8mm is a lot easier than the rimmed 7.62x54r and brass tend to last longer with the shorter necked case of the 8mm.And you can much easily mount the mauser for a realy good mount if you do not mind altering it a tad ,clean the grease off the stock throw some good oil on her and go hunting with her like she is.Will look Great With original stock and a few coats of linseed oil or w/e else you like.I can show my mauser i did the stock on if you like and i am planning on useing the repro scope and mount as i have a sporter mauser as well if you like to see either or.For me mauser all day long.:D
