Received my Mosin Nagant today. BUT! what a mess this comosline stuff is.

Came with all the goodies, bayonet, cartridge belt, tools, etc

I am going to take it slow in cleaning. I will clean all the metal parts with mineral sprints. Letting all parts soak over night.

As to stock, I will use my wife clothes steamer to get a lot of it off the wood, then I will use the hot sun to let it cook and keep wiping off the wood.

Will be glad to accept any advice.

Yep, got a box of surgical gloves.:)

Scrub the bore with hot water before cleaning as usual.

The MN is a beautiful wood protected rifle.

It is practically covered with wood inlay from bore to butt.

I have seen several at the local rifle range.

For anyone on a budget, or for a collector, they are ideal.

You can use a hair dryer to warm it up. The comoslean whips right off with a little heat

A piece of PVC pipe with a cap glued on one end works well for cleaning the barrel / receiver. Make it longer than your mosin slide her in and fill with mineral spirits. Let it soak

True, the wood does form a pretty good sleeve for most of the metal.

    Field strip it.

Leave it all out in the sun on a hot day, with

newspaper underneath. Wipe it down every three hours or so

    with rags or other newspaper.

I use the little metal bottle to carry Mobil1 and ATF

in my mobile gun cleaning kit.

You can get recoil pads for @9$. Improves the LOP.

    Have fun...

    Congrats!

But seeing as there aren't any pics it blatantly didn't happen.

Putting it out in a shed or car when it's a hot bright day helps loosen it up, as well as pull it out of the stock

Welcome to the not-so-exclusive club of Mosin Nagant owners. Between the price of ammo and the gun, you can't go wrong

I soaked all metal parts in mineral spirits, cleaned parts that didn't fit in a bucket with wd40, and used "orange clean" on the wood. Then I degreased it again and oiled it with my usual gun oil. I have a feeling, when I shoot it, that its still going to weep some cosmoline. Congrats on your purchase.

Don't listen to them. In a Mosin, the bolt cycles you.

    This way works great!

I finally got around this afternoon to working on fixing my sticky bolt issue I had on one I picked up last year. Hoping to get to the range tomorrow to see if it worked. So much fun to shoot!

OP - Are you shooting surplus or commercial ammo?
