I've changed my mind about .22 for HD

A .22 will kill every time - if you are shooting squirrels. And I don't give a rat's a$$ about those that defend a .22 round as worthy of consideration for self-defense. Placement my butt. When the adrenalin is out of control, as it is even with trained law enforcement, placement is 50% skill and 50% luck.
I carry a G30 with 200g+P Speer GD and trained to never fire less than two. Buddy, that's mentally comforting, as well as a round that will do the job. My BUG is a .357 J-frame.

PS: I will give you an OK on the 9mm, but be sure and put two in them at least. The objective is not to 'stop the threat.' That's what you tell the cops and DA. The objective is to drop them on the spot, never to get up again.

If the number 22 is sentimental, you could get a .44 and imagine you are dual-wielding.

It could be a good excuse to get into reloading. 44 special for the target shooting with 44 mag for workin.

I don't know how well your little dog would fare in a fight with two big dogs, but I have seen a Rottweiler killed by a chihuahua before.

I won't lie, for 4 legged things, I wouldn't trust a 22 either. They're too fast and spry, when you finally get a decent aim it better count. For that I want size and noise.

Still, I'd rather have a machete. Let it get a good locking bite on the useless left arm then chop it in half with the right.

A 22 pistol is not a lot of protection when it comes to animals. A 22 pistol will stop a person with a well placed shot but humans are very slow in comparison to dogs or other aggressive animals. The Israeli Air marshals carry 22 pistols and they get the job done, The 22 kills more people than any round each and every year. That doesn't mean the 22 is the best weapon for self defense.

Pistols are really a compromise. A 9mm fired from a 4" barrel makes about the same energy as a 22 magnum fired from a rifle and the rifle is far more accurate than any handgun. I walk my dog in the woods every day, I carry a 9mm or a 357 mag. I might have to dispatch anything from an aggressive snake to a pack of coyotes that see my dog as their next meal.

The guide line I use is
"Would you get into a pen with a 100# wild hog and feel that your SD handgun can cleanly kill the pig? If not, then why expect it to stop a 200# bad guy?"

I wouldn't trust the .22 for SD though it's better than nothing. However, for the dogs in the drive I would have.

This topic is something my fil and i discuss from time to time. My wife wants to get her indiana handgun permit and possibly get her own pistol but til then will most likely carry my .380. He is convinced she needs to carry sonething chambered in .22 lr but personally i dont think its a good idea. If youre a really good shot and could deliver that little round stright through your attacker's eye then maybe. The .22 isnt considered a good hd round for the same reason it isnt considered a good deer hunting round. Can a .22 take down a deer? Sure if you're a good shot and you know exactly were to hit the deer, ive seen it done but id rather have a bigger round with more knockdown power.

Just asking did you shoot and kill some one else's dogs because your dog was attacking them while I have no problem with it if they were attacking you but it dosent sound like it?
