A friend has a feral hog problem. He built a pen type trap in a location where he can easily feed/water the hogs. Every time he plans a big bash he baits the trap. He usually catches several small hogs in a couple days. He feeds the hogs out until the day of the party. They are always yummy! He uses hog slate brand finisher, it is affordable and the meat is delicious.

Parks and Wildlife over (commonly called Sparks and Wildfires because of their ability to not burn off during Spring to reduce fire load) usually hold chopper shoots to cull out feral pigs and it's not uncommon for them in some places to shoot 3-500 pigs over a couple of days especially in our North.

It can be made into jerky but special precautions must be taken:

QUOTE] If pork or wild game is used to make jerky, the meat should be treated to kill the trichinella parasite before it is sliced and marinated. This parasite causes the disease trichinosis. To treat the meat, freeze a portion that is 6 inches or less thick at 0ºF or below for at least 30 days. Freezing will not eliminate bacteria from the meat.[/QUOTE]

there are huge populations of feral hogs here in East Texas. they ruin lots of pasture land and will root up huge areas looking for food.

just a couple of weeks ago, on my way to work, a pack of them, (about 12-14) crossed the road in front of me close to a creek bottom.

and feral hog is pretty good eating when smoked like brisket!:D
