I have a couple of older 870s and 1100s with fixed full chokes that I would like to have drilled and taped for the Rem chokes. Has anyone had this done? Does it matter what fixed choke the donor barrel has. What about cutting the barrel shorter and then having the chokes put in? I have heard of this being done, but have never heard any details. I figure since the 870 & 1100 will never be great collector items, it would be better than buying new barrels for them, and maybe a LITTLE cheaper.

Chokes in Old Rem Barrels: POST REM RECALL ?

Many older Rem 870/1100 barrels are NOT suitable to choke. So many were made out of round and not concentric (Thicker and thinner rather than consistant in diameter).

Many moons ago, Remington admitted the problem and did a recall with a coupon option to get a new barrel....all well past and gone away.

Rem Chokes are not suited to most older barrels. Colonial Chokes, with a full line of screw ins, are available via Brownells. Check with local gunsmiths or on line to find somebody with the tooling to install the chokes for you.

The first step is to measure your individual barrel to see IF it is suitable for screw in chokes.

For safety, reliability and pattern consistancy, I would watch for a Cabela's sale after the season , on replacement Remington barrels.

I wanted to keep the original barrels for looks. I know I could buy new barrels, maybe just buy one of each, (1-870 & 1-1100) and just change them out when I take a different gun.
