When shooting IDPA, is your score calculated based on your time as well as where you hit? I've seen the targets and I assume you get + or - points depending on where you hit. Any suggestions for a first time shooter would be great.

The targets are divided into zones as in USPSA/IPSC, however the zones denote "Points Down". The target has a Zero zone (denoting zero points down), a One zone (denoting one point down), and a Three zone (Denoting three points down). A miss is 5 points down. "Points Down" equate to one half of a second, thus if your shot is "Zero Points Down" no time is added to your time for the stage. A shot that is one point down will cause one half second to be added to your score, a shot that is 3 points down will cause 1 and 1/2 seconds to be added, and a miss will cause two and a half seconds to be added. The time required for you to shoot a stage, and your "Points Down" (as well as any appropriate penalties) is added together for your stage score. The shooter in your division and classification with the lowest total time is the winner. :)

Don't forget, if you get 2 shot's in the 3 zone and none in the 1 or 0 zone then that is 6 point's down and a FTN. Which a FTN is 5 seconds added to your score and that doesn't get divided in half.

My advise is listen to the SO and have fun. Let us know how it went.

USPSA is more laid back run and gun style isn't it?

Yes but IDPA is fun as well. Less rules in USPSA.

Thanks for that link. By reading that, it looks like I would actually prefer IDPA...
