    Hello everyone,

I had a discussion with some of my co-workers today, and they both agreed with me that if one was ever made, they would buy this upper for their ar15's.

My idea was, what if a company made a 500 S&W Magnum upper for the AR15? Magazine capacity would probably be around 10 or 12 rounds (I suppose, since there is a company who makes a 10MM Auto upper that comes with an 18 round mag).

Barrel Length would be 16" Bull Barrel. I dont see any reason why it couldn't be done, seeing as how there is already the 50 Beowulf

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear feedback

I was able to fit seven into a twenty round magazine. You will have to overcome the semi-rimmed cartridge and the extra pressure.

Love the idea! Any AR that can share ammo with a hand cannon would be sick. Actually I cant think of one revolver round that there is an AR upper for. The rim, like McCool mentioned, would be a feed issue. The pressure woundn't be that far off from the beowulf though, so I don't see much of an issue there besides the engineering.

it's novel idea. but the two rounds are so close in ballistics, i don't see any advantage. the semi rimmed case being one. the the 50 Beowulf has a case OAL of 1.65" and the 500 S&W has a case OAL of 1.6".

To me, the advantage of a 500 Magnum AR over a 50 Beowulf would be that there is no 50 Beowulf pistol. If you go hunting and carry a handgun in addition to your rifle/carbine, you could carry both and only worry about buying one caliber instead of two

I haven't made up my mind yet, but i am thinking of suggesting it to a gun company, say for example Red Jacket Firearms, or some other custom shop. Do you guys think any company would ever make it given the suggestion? I ask because before i posted this topic on the forum, there was absolutely no results on the internet for discussion about a 500 Magnum AR

Not unless you're gonna buy it as a custom piece. I don't see enough of a market out there to convince a company to re tool a portion of their equipment, espically when they are barley keeping up with demand for rifles in 5.56 and 300 black and other basic calibers. There aren't that many people with 500s when you look at the big numbers. Imo I just don't think you could convince a manufacturer that it would be profitable after the r&d required, testing, re tooling etc. It's a cool idea, just think it would be a tough sell. Just my two cents

I have had friends ask about a 500 s&w AR, and have always pointed out the rim being a problem and the 50 Beowulf already filling the "need". With that said, I have a 500 and would love to have a 500 ar to go with it. I have also had a talk with a local hobby shop owner about a 500 lever gun.

    11B3OJ3,

do you think there would be a better large pistol caliber round that would work in an AR upper? I am considering the possibility of having an AR custom made, and I want it to be a powerful pistol round. I dont have the "It's got to be the 500 or not at all" mindframe.

Also, would you say I'd be far better off just buying either a 450 Bushmaster, 458 Socom, or 50 Beowulf AR?

You probably won't find any of those cartridges in stores. Except the .500 S&W magnum.

That's disappointing to hear, I was not aware of that.

MisterMcCool, do you have any experience with AR's chambered for rounds other than the 223/5.56? If so, do you have any recommendations?

What I'm really looking for, honestly, is a rifle that i can take into the dismal swamp area in Suffolk along the VA/NC border, that I can use to take a whitetail, but in a caliber big enough to take down a black bear if the opportunity presented itself and i wouldn't have a caliber that would just slightly wound or even anger the bear. I'm not sure what caliber to go with

Mine is .556 NATO. Is the .300 large enough for black bears?

any of these listed would probably suit you needs quite well. just realize that ammo for them isn't going to be cheap and readily available just everywhere.

certain cartridges are more suited to people who have fat wallets or reload.

Are you referring to the 300 blackout? if so, i have no experience with it, nor do I know anyone who has even shot one

how does it compare in power to 7.62x39?

Is there such a thing as a .410 upper?
