I was at a big gun show in Fort Worth yesterday and I bought a new to me, used Walther P38.

I've always enjoyed the looks of the P38 but had not ever bought one or even shot one.

I had already bought a Sig P226 and was just goofing around, and then I saw this very pretty P38 laying on a very small vendors table with only 6 other guns.

I had always seen many blued P38's, but never one like this.

After I looked it over and bought it - I asked the vendor where he had gotten it and he said it was part of a 30 gun estate sale that he had bought.

There is a date stamped on the right side of the slide 4/69 (at least it looks like a date).

    Serial # is 323XXX.

    Gun is in great condition.

Can anyone tell me anything about this beautiful gun?

    Thanks for your help.

Not at all I paid $450 out the door for it.

Which because it was so unique, IMHO a beautiful gun and I'd never seen one that color - the price was fine with me.

I've had it all apart to clean it and it is in great shape.

As I said before the guy said he bought it in a estate sale -

    I think lucky me.:D

Hope someone can chime in soon with some real info but it's sure a beautiful specimen. What finish is that, doubt they were made in stainless steel but nickel plating doesn't have that satiny brushed look. Some frames were aluminum but not the barrel too. Anyway it looks amazing, hardly fired so should be well worth the price you paid.

I'm sure it's tempting to fire it but probably best to find out what you've got first. Definitely looks like it spent most of its life as a safe queen!

It looks like electroless nickel. Can you post some more pics?

It is stamped P38, or P1?

I have a WW2 bringback that shoots great. AC43, if I remember right. Lower left in this photo.

Good looking pistol. I wonder if it's hard chrome?

    I really do not know.

About all I'm sure of is it is a very well done after market finish.

I would like to know what it is just so I don't mess it up using the wrong cleaning stuff.

If it's hard chrome, there's not much you can do to mess it up. I don't know about nickel finishes, I've never owned a nickel finished handgun.

I guess it's also possible that it's a Robar or Robar type of finish.

If that's the case, it will be a good, tough finish and be hard to hurt.

I did some digging and can't get any info on a P38 II with a nickel/chrome factory finish.

Is the finish flat silver (hard chrome), or does it have some gold tone (e-nickel)to it? If you run your fingernail across the surface, is it rough (hard chrome) of does it glide easily (e-nickel)?

Hard chrome is pretty tough to hurt with solvents.

Nickel can be affected by harsh cleaners, and if left on the surface will lift it off.

I like the lubricity and corrosion protection of e-nickel.

I like the durability and corrosion protection of hard chrome.

Nickel is more likely to stain with salt, sweat, etc.

It is more rough than smooth.

It does not have any gold in it.

It is a fairly silver color.
