If I remember right, J Stevens in N.Y. was manufacturing shotguns for Sears and Roebuck since the 1890s or something like that. I would guess the early 1900s? Try to look for smokeless powder proof marks on the piece and that can narrow the time frame! I will check some other sources and get back to you with any information that I can gather! It was J. Stevens and Co from 1864-1886. It was J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. from 1886-1915. J. Stevens Arms Co. from 1915-1940. Stevens from 1940-1991.well the company was in business from 1888 to 1920 when it was bought out by savage arms.
with the models produced betweeen 1948-1968 theres a letter code stamped behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger gaurd.
