    I'm going to quote canebrake.

"One full magazine after the shooting stops."

If you're wondering how many rounds most reloders keep in stock, I'll tell you my rules.

I shoot 38 spl, 9mm Luger, 40 s&w, 45 acp, & 45 long colt in pistols. I keep 1000 rounds each loaded with capability of loading 200 more each without going out.

In rifles, I shoot 22 lr, 257 rob, 243 win, 25-06 rem, 270 win, 30-30 win, & 30-06 spr. For each of these I keep 100 rounds loaded with capability to load 200 more each.

As long as I have that quantity, I'm satisfied.

By the way, What's the federal limit for ammunition?

    ??????

Is there really a limit on how much ammo one person can accumulate?

I don't reload, so I'm really at the mercy of retailers and trying to find good deals, and when I do find a good deal I usually buy at least 1000 rds......that said I get a little "twitchy" if get get below a couple thousand rds of each caliber I use.

Enough? If you still have one round left when you die, you had enough.

I have enough rifle, pistol and shotgun ammo to shoot until I am 99.

Then I have to load more.:p

I was joking in a way, but a friend of mine told me that there was one of those 'selectively enforced laws' that limited the amount of ammo you can accumulate at once without being a licensed dealer. Maybe this is a good one for the legal forum?

It actually wouldn't surprise me if there was such a law knowing our idiot politicians.

Another thing to consider is magazines. If there really was SHTF action going on in your neighborhood and zombie hordes were coming, you only have as much ammo as you actually have preloaded in magazines.

Until there is a break in the shooting (or you have a helper who can reload magazines for you competently), you are limited to the number of rounds in magazines already.

For your primary sidearm (1911 for me) and your primary battle rifle (AR-15 for me), one should have a large # of loaded magazines ready to go.

    Good point on the mags!

But don't be silly, zombies would have you overrun after about 4 magazines!

Around here, "Zombie" is generally used euphemistically. Have plenty of loaded mags ready to go because you never know when they will come in handy.

As to "How much ammo?", there is no such thing as "too much".

Ya gotta love a capacious, all-encompassing, metaphorical, euphemism like "zombie." I pray I never meet one, much less a horde. But if I do, they'll certainly have a hole or two before breeching my castle.

That's one limitation. Others are the type of floor you have and the height of the ceilings. Concrete slabs are no problem, if you have a basement or crawl space you may be limited by the weight of the ammo (pounds per Sqft).

    I have three SHTF guns, an AK-47, a HK USC/UMP conv., and a 1911.

I keep 23 AK mags loaded
4 25 round UMP mags loaded
    and 4 1911 mags loaded
    at this time.

As funds permit I will add more mags.

It's just one of those deals that if you like to reload and have time, you always seem to load more.
It's what you feel comfortable with. If things go way south (we are already there, most just have not realized it yet) ammo will be good for self defense, hunting and trading., so a decent supply should be kept on hand.
