How much ammo do you keep at home?

I can't remember where I heard this, but someone told me you should have at least 1000 rounds of ammo at home for each type of handgun you own.

I have more than 3 handguns, but they are all either 380, 9mm, or .40. So, I have 1000 rounds (or more) of each. I wouldn't consider myself crazy, but I think the day may come when we'll rely more and more on ourselves for protection. As such, I don't ever intend to stop stocking up ... in fact, I'm working now on my '1000' rounds to be bonded JHP of each caliber. (Currently, most is just range ammo)

Thoughts? I know a guy who has a variety of AR-15, AK47 type rifles, and he must have at least 15,000 rounds in his basement.

I keep a few hundred rounds loaded per most used handgun and longun, but I reload, so I do have a substantial stockpile of components to load up thousands if required.

I have a friend who used to say that I never had to worry about my house burning down. If it caught fire the vacuum would put it out, because all of the ammo would blow it into outer space.

Fluctuates between 800-1,200 on average due to shooting.

    How much.......

When you watch the news, and see whats going to happen when the System fails. My house isn't big enough to hold what I will need to kill millions of people who are out to steal my guns, ammo and food.......

Amen brother. I'm not exactly rich, but trying to put about $100/week into ammo (that doesn't include what I shoot). Guess one way of looking at the expense is that it's about as much as a car payment. (Too bad for my 12-year old, who might have to live with a new bike when he turns 16!)

Without ammo, a gun is an expensive club. How much is enough? IMHO it is having one round left when you die of old age.

I have a glock 31 .357sig with 5 high cap magazines, a 1911 with 8 wilson combat 8rd magazines, an M4 with 25 magpul 30rd Pmags and enough ammo to accomodate every magazine.. And a sum left over.. I also have a winchester model 70 7mmWSM and keep a couple of boxes for it as well...

I don't really aim to keep any specific number, I just add ammo when the price is right.

    Estimates
    22lr- 7000rds
    5.56/223- 3000
    308- 400
    12g- 600
    9mm- 2500-3000 (I shoot a lot of 9mm)
    45acp- 1000+
40sw- 700 (don't own anything to fire them from at the moment, LOL)
    357sig- 500

For each caliber, about 15-30% would fall under the guise of "premium/exotic/defense" rounds...JHPs, Buck/Slug, Match grade, Tracers, CCI Stingers, etc. So I guess my total tally is just north of 15,000. But the 22lr does skew that number a bit.

I used to be really into stocking up but now that I reload all my ammo, I haven't worried about it so much. I mostly just keep a couple hundred rounds on hand loaded up, and a little more .22lr. Basically, enough for a range trip and to still have one or two hundred rounds left.

I figure if Im still alive after firing hundreds of shots, there will be plenty of guns and ammo to choose from.

I stock enough ammo to have one full magazine remaining after the gunfight. [IMG]

I like the general rule of thumb though of minimum 1000 rounds for rifles and 500 for handguns. Adjust that for more ammo on "go to" guns and less ammo for backups. Maybe get a lot more 22LR because it's so cheap and would help "most" for food hunting in TEOTWAWKI.

    More is better. =)

I'm just a bit short of 1000 on my .45ACP, about 1000 on the 9mm, only a few boxes of 7.62x25, only a bulkpack or so of .22LR, a couple of boxes of .22 magnum, maybe 500 rounds of .357mag & 38special, and about 1000 on the 7.62x39. I really need to order some ammo for the 12 guage; i probably don't have more than a dozen rounds of buck & slugs and maybe a few boxes of target/dove rounds. I don't know if i have 25 rounds for the .410 or the 20 guage, but they are single shots for hunting. I don't keep but a pound or two of BP substitute and maybe a hundred balls and caps for each BP pistol; i figure i could get some meth cook to show me how to make some gunpowder (whacky tweekers  ).

Most of my stuff (75%ish) is just range fodder/fmj, except the .357; Wally's doesn't usually have anything but SJHP or SP in that.

I plan to get back on stocking up in the near future; i had been picking up a few boxes every trip to Wally's until this summer.

What sucks is the slingshot; ever tried to find a round rock in MS? If you aren't near a creek, you are SOL.

Don't keep much if any loaded ammunition around as I shoot it all up fairly quick.

I'm breaking the rules. I have about 150 rounds for my 9mm in the house.

Went to the range last few weekends and went thru 200+ rounds 9mm, 1,500+ rounds 22lr, so that hurt the stock.

Going to start building my stock up again next week.

Ok, so another question. How long does ammo last? I assume dozens of years, but not sure.
