how do you use the open sights on a 1895 mauser???

    so i got a 1895 chilean mauser and i dont know how to utilize the sights.... from what i can gather its called a "barleycorn sight?"... from my novice stand point it flips up has numbers and a slide thingy that goes up and down. what id like to know is it it says 20 or 17 on the slide does that indicate 200 or 170 meters?? anyways thanks

    I'm fairly sure it means 20=2,000 meters, 5=500 meters, and so forth. Don't expect to actually hit anything at those ranges however. A bunch of us did have a 55 gallon metal drum out at 800 meters and once dialed in, was able to lob tracers in on the drum fairly consistently. That's a mighty big target though.
