found a 20 gauge mossberg pump black syntetic stock/pump the pistol grip comes extra with the gun in the box, gold dot sight on the end, no rails on the barrel and 18.5 inch barrel, price 378 new. Is that to much? or should i start looking around for a used one and the black syn stock as aftermarket etc? id like to put a forend that has a flash light in it anyone have any idea on price or if its worth investing in? 12-gauge seems to me the best way to go for home defense. There is a huge variety of loads. 20-gauge just seems to limit your options.

There are ultra light 12 bore loads

that kick less than a 20 gauge.

Yep, exactly the point. 12-gauge can bring such a huge amount of flexibility to the collection (by using different shells) that it is a great way to go. Perhaps a good first step is going to a few different sources for shells and see what is available for 12- and 20-gauge. You'll notice a real paucity of 20-gauge choices.

I remember when you posted your other topic about which SG would be good for your mother. Like I said then it's not only a recoil issue, but how the gun fits to your mother and how easy the handling of it would be for her such as effortless swings. I still believe a 20ga. will be best for her.

Have you gone to Bud's Gun Store on the net and checked prices?
I was floating through there the other day and saw a Mossberg 500SP 20ga. with a 18.5" barrel for $315.00. It was chambered in 3" and has a capacity of 5+1, weights 6.5 lbs. It being a 500 model you will be able to get many accessories for it. Bud's Item # 46499 Check it out, I believe your mom will like it. :)

While I like the 12 ga better myself, there have been advances in the loads available in 20 ga due to more women and children getting into shooting. There are improved loads for all kinds of situations. Heck, there are even slugs for the 20 ga that are fairly accurate out to 200+ yards. I know that is not defense minded, I am just saying that the options in 20 ga have improved over the past few years.

I agree with Underfire with the issue is more of a handling issue rather than recoil. That is why I suggested a youth model. I also agree that $378 is a bit much for a new Mossy. Shop around a bit.
