In an interview Michail Kalashnikov stated that he was opposed to switching to the 5.45x39mm round and instead favored creating a higher velocity 7.62 round. In your opinion was he right?

If you are into reloading and tried to make your own High Velocity 7.62 how would you do it?
-my best idea so far would be to load 100 grain Lapua Hollowpoints, although they'd still be pretty heavy compared to 5.45mm.

They have 7.62x54r; do you mean something like 7.62x39mm+P?

I don't think he was referring to 7.62x54 since that one's older than 7.62x39. According to Mikhail when the Kremlin requested that they create a round similar to the NATO 5.56mm he was opposed to it and wanted to create an "updated 7.62mm round". That of course could mean alot of different things though.

I suppose he was thinking along the lines of a .308 round. Similar to the 7.62 but with a longer case and more powder behind it.

Well, they did revise the 7.62x39mm design back in the 1960's, i bleve, but that was the projectile rather than the propellant.
