I'm helping (trying) a lady identify an old Flintlock rifle. I 've searched Flayderman's guide, but I think that this piece might not be of US origin. It's barrel is 40.5 inch, with a thin an battered crown. A choke gauge shows about 0.83 inch bore. The stock is very rough and chipped.

No date stamp here and different barrel, but yeah, other than that it looks identical.

In Britain, all military arms are the property of the Sovereign, and were so marked. The GR is for George Rex- or King George (one of my Enfields is VR- Victoria Regina). A photo of both side of entire piece would help, but yes, appears to be early Brit military musket. Check India Pattern Brown Bess and see if that looks like yours.

PS- If you have not done so, use a ramrod and make SURE it is not still loaded. Sometimes, those have a surprise still sitting there.....
