I would like to date a gun that belonged to my grandfather. Believe that he originally recieved the gun while working with police department in Berkeley, CA. Serial number is 4496_ _. It is a 38 Special CTG with a 4 inch barrel. Any information you might have would be appreciated.

Yeah I thought so, but someone can always
mean something I've never heard of. I'm not anywhere close to my catalog, but I'm sure someone will chime in here. Top of my head but that number is probably in the range of a 4th change Police and Military Model of 1905. My guess would be somewhere in mid 1920's. I have one as well close to that serial number.

Value of Gun

Wow, I thought it might be that old, but wasn't sure. This gun is in unbelieviable good condition for its age. Just simply wasn't used much and it was maintained well. Any guesses as to what a gun like this would be worth?

More information on Revolver

I have a bit more information, probably should have provided it in the first place. There are three patent dates listed on the gun: 2/6/1906, 09/14/1908, and 12/28/1914. I am assuming this means it would be later than 1914.
