Found a Mauser 98 at my local shop, its pretty well mint and has a 45 on the top of the receiver. A star before the serial number and no German markings, the owner says its French and he'll take $500 for it. I'm sure he knows what hes talking about but I can't find any info on it anywhere.

Anybody familiar with them, also is it worth the $500?

I have a byf 1945 that also has a star before the serial number. The guy i got mine from also really knows his **** and said its a German K98. I pain $500 for mine, its in amazing condition, and has the original sling. I have looked every where and never could figure out what it means.

If yours is a byf gun than it was produced in the Mauser AG Oberndorf factory which makes it German.

    Also no signs of refurbish.

Muser Obendorf was kept in operation by the French. I THINK the distinctive mark for those may be "Mod. 98/ svwMB", and some MAY have a different means of attaching the sling.

What do you want to know, it`s a late WWII K98 rifle that was produced at the Mauser-Werke, A.G. Oberndorf facility.........
