hello all, I'm looking for an affordable shotgun for mostley buckshot and some slug work. I like the pistol grip handle that some shotguns have but I don't need that if it can be a problem. what should I be looking for like barrel, length, style, ext. I would also like to reload my own shells.

oh, I think I would like the 3 1/2" shells and I really like the matt finish!!

thanks in advance for the help, I'm a rookie just trying to get informed on shotguns.

also I would like to try to keep the price under $500 or so

what do you guys and gals think I should look at???

again great site!!! thanks in advance.

also I like the pumps,I have seen seven shots. and I also like the semi auto shotguns. but I wouldn't want an air powered auto.

this shotgun will be used for shooting into the side of a hill and "god forbid" home pertection.

what are you guys suggestions?

My opinion, worth what you paid for it:

Remington 870 Express, 3" chamber. The pistol grip may look sharp but if you do get one, make sure that you have a shoulder stock too, probably folding. After you've shot it a couple of times without benefit of shoulder stock, you'll see why. The 3 1/2" shells might be useful if you want to hunt geese but not for home defense. Just not necessary. Short, Cylinder bore or Improved Cylinder. 00 Buck is easily overchoked, unless it's stacked in 2s rather than the much more common 3s.

I would also like to reload my own shells.
That's another game entirely. If you have any general or specific questions.................?

Mossberg is always a good value for the money. I personally like Browning shotguns and have a semi-auto and a pump. Benelli or Beretta are nice guns, but a little over your stated price range.

Don't worry about getting a shotgun chambered for 3-1/2 shells. 2- 3/4 inch shells will kill just as quick and at the same range as 3" and 3-1/2". The only thing 3 and 3-1/2 are good for is kicking the **** out of your shoulder. Some people say you have to have a magnum shell to kill a turkey, but that is total b.s., I've killed turkey with low speed 2-3/4 inch 4 shot.

New England makes a pump called the Protector and it can be picked up for $180 in most areas. It's basically a copy of the 870 and some of it's parts are interchangable.

If you can get a Saiga 12 for $300, buy it. If you don't like it, I'll pay you what you paid for it.

mossberg 500 or the remington 870 would be my first choice primarily because i like to have whatever the law enforcement and military use. if u want a pistol grip i would check out advanced technologies inc. they have a collapsable stock similar to that on a m16 that can quickly be transformed into a plain pistol grip and back in seconds, plus youll have plenty of cash for other awsome upgrades without passing the $500 price range
