What are the advantages/disadvantages of hammer operated guns as opposed to the striker fired guns? Thanks

The main advantage to most conventional hammer type handguns is the fact that you can have repeat strike capability,hammer is exposed visually insuring knowledge wether handgun is cocked,and fact that you can cock hammer for lighter single action pull. As your question was somewhat vague as to brand and type-this is not the case with all handguns within this catagory.

I was going to ask a very similar question, as I'm in the market for my first firearm.

I've noticed many of the semi-autos are hammerless ("strikerfire"?) What is the benefit of this? To me it seems all around less safe without any real gain.

I'd think that it depended on the gun, and your preference/usage. I've got both types, but no hesitation to carry either one. I do tend to carry the ones with a hammer in certain places, but that's more due to the fact that they have safeties/decockers. I feel better with those when around the grandkids. Not that it probably makes a difference, it's just me.

What teknoid said. I've got/carry both too. I lean toward the striker, carry an M&P most of the time. Some say a hammer can get hung up on clothing, but it never happened to me when carrying a 1911. Carried in C1, so the hammer was out of the way.

My first two guns were striker fired. My basic cold weather carry being an xd9sc.

My last 5 guns have had hammers. My warm carry is a keltec pf9. Its hammer but does not allow for single action.

I like hammers because they generally offer a double action first pull followed by easy single action after.

I feel a little better with the gun hot this way without having to use the manual safety (although the grip safety of the XD makes me feel just as safe)
