Hey you guys! many apologies for my long absence from the board  Involved and painful story of computer/ISP disasters but am posting this from a kindly-lent broadband connection - and you'll see why that was needed shortly, heh.

Two brief words - Gun Heaven! And yes, I went there.

AKA Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum; I've known of its existence for years, no idea why it took so long to get there...but by god I'm glad I did.

Expected a history of SMLE-production (as that was its prime function since 1912), a mention of the Steyr Aug (currently made under licence somewhere up the back well away from the public gaze) and also maybe the civilian products manufactured there over the decades...and that would have been satifying enough...but....

    How wrong I was.

It almost doesn't seem real even now...but walk into this unassuming old building at the front of the now-disused main factory (its remains too toxic to dismantle) and you hit the Mother-effing-lode!

A collection of 1200 pistols (all donated by one man, incredible as that seems). Australian and foreign machine guns thru the ages...service weapons of same...heavy machine guns of many types...and egad the only Kalashnikov I've ever seen  Not behind glass either!

I would have been giggling like the proverbial schoolgirl had I not been rendered speechless lol

No need to inflict all 202 photos on you heh. I took some rough footage (cam was a bit shaky admittedly) so I'll shut up now and let it do the talking...

Been so frustrating waiting to be able to share them with you guys. I felt the 3 hours I spent there was way too rushed...a return visit is definately in order. Went thru almost 3 cameras when successive batteries failed heh.

Got to handle a Steyr too which was a treat you couldn't get anywhere else; very comfortable bet it would be nice to shoot.

'Demonstrators' - how very civilised. Love the politely-worded notice "Please do not take these weapons apart" lol

Yeah Aus, you got to get your arse over there next time you're near Sydney mate. Would have stowed away overnight if I could have managed it lol

You have a good (hopefully) beer-drenched Aus Day too mate. It's gonna be a scorcher down here!

Seems incredible that a collection like this exists in such a gun-phobic nation huh.

Apparently it is the only museum in Australia to have such a windfall. Pathetically, such was the wholesale Govt encouraged fear-mongering and paranoia after the introduction of the 1996 laws, that this resulted in many major public museums removing all but their most antique weapons from display (guns manufactued before 1901 do not need to be licensed...and of course are far less threatening to a fearful public, due to their non 'black n scary' nature lol)

So this museum is singularly fantastic for preserving and displaying our military history as no where else does.

And thank god for that :D
