Gout?

    I've been home for 2 weeks today due to gout in my lower leg/foot.
    With heavy doses of steroids, I'm walking agAin and should be back at work Thursday though I'm still in pain.
    It's gotten worse over the last few years. It used to hit about once in 18 months but it's gotten to the point of a severe attack every three months. The docs say they've never seen a case this bad and are finally hooking me up with arthritis specialist.
    I've tried drugs, gone holistic with black cherry extracts, and Apple cider vinegar but nothing seems to help.
    How about it? Anybody here dealing with gout? Any tips?
    I've had open heart surgery, and I swear, this is much worse.

    I used to have gout attacks but they were never really enough for me to start taking anything for them. I started taking a vitamin B supplement for an unrelated problem and the gout went away. Might give that a try. I am not a doctor and have never claimed to be one.

    You said you have tried drugs. For me Allopurinol has been my fix. That prescription drug and watching what I eat that can spike the uric acid has me under control.

    Hope you can beat it.

    I have been living with it for the last couple weeks. Not severe just enough to be a pain in the toe. As long as I do the things I know I should and stay away from the things I know I should I don't have any problems. Red meat(beef, venison) and alcohol makes mine flair up. Normally don't drink much but labor day weekend I drank a little more than I should have and had a nice ribeye to boot.. So now it is a diet of chicken and salad till it goes away. Woman at work said dried cranberries helps but haven't tried it.

    I had gout. You will be surprised at the foods you need to avoid. Pork is a no no. Avoid lots of salt. Even foods that are normally good for you like spin age are high in purines not good for gout.

    Do lots of googling for mor info. Not all Dr. give right info. For example my mom had gout as well her dr. told her to eat everything that was on my no list and my list mostly matches what I've found on reputable medical sites.

    I have dealt with gout for a few years and it effects my feet, knees, and elbows. I have learned that it is all about avoidance. Stay away from anything high in protein like red meat, shell fish, and nuts. Also if I eat too much yeast as in bread and beer I get my worst flair ups. The Dr used to prescribe anti inflammatory meds but I have learned that several glasses of water, and I mean up to a gallon of water throughout the day, combined with Aleeve has proven the best remedy for me. The most important thing really is keeping your your system flushed out with water and staying away from certain foods. My five most avoidable foods are ribs, clams, pizza, peanut butter, and large steaks. Basically my favorite foods :(

    My rule of thumb is if it tastes good iit causes gout.

    Never had it myself, but I believe drinking lots and lots of green tea helps (which I do). I do know that this has raised my body pH (less acidic) significantly. I am a 6+ when I check in the AM (when you are typically highest). I have also heard that putting a few drops of lemon essential oils (not lemon juice- it must be the EO!) into your water bottle that you should be carrying with you every day and drinking plenty of that every day. You need to piss like crazy all day long but that means you are flushing out the nasties. The lemon oil dissolves the uric acid crystals that collect in your joints and causes the pain.
