My brother wants to get a gun to keep in his work truck and kill snakes that he comes across. What would be the best kind for him to get? My idea was something like a .410 or a .22 pistol.

I would say a 410. Bc if you get the .22 revolver you would have to get a permit. And you can find a nice single shot 410 cheaper than the revolver.

.410 is a really universal little package. Shot, slugs, and 3 Ball loads are available for it. It would be more useful than any pistol.

A .410 Snake Charmer would fit real handy in the pickup cab. They are sort of a long barreled single shot pistol/shotgun hybrid.

I think your brother is looking at it all wrong. The best defense is a great offense. Take care of the area of snakes BEFORE he works there. All he has to do is pick up the pocket I.C.B.M.

I'll have to agree with sniper762. The Taurus Judge is capable of shooting .45 Colt (not my first choice at snakes), .45 Colt shotshells, or .410 shotgun shells.

Easy to carry, easy to store be it in your pack or your car. Suffices as a tolerable self-defense weapon, too, as long as you keep your shots in close.

As an alternative to the Taurus the .S&W Governor can throw out .45acp as well with provided moonclips if memory serves me, I believe the price range ta be tween bout 650$ / 450$ the latter be'n without red crimson trace laser

I got a 42" rattler on our front walk last night with my ruger 10/22 because that was the closest weapon available that was not a .45 semi. This guy was big for rattlers in this area. The length of the 10/22 allowed me to to get close enough to shoot parallel to the ground as opposed to shooting into the concrete. Single shot took off 80% of the head.

If I were looking for a beater to keep in the truck for snakes, I'd check the local pawn shops for a cheap single shot 20ga. It's cheaper than .410, more available, and more shot. I'd cut the barrel down to 18¼", put a buttstock shell holder on it with a few bird shots and a few buckshots and maybe a slug. That's just me.

A big stick is all you need to kill a snake. Never understood the snake gun mentality of people. Unless it's a poisonous snake why kill it? Pick up a stick walk up to it and give it a good whack. That is all there is to it. 1/2 of there body length is all any snake can strike and most less. A 4' rattler strikes 2' so what is the problem?
