I was hunting the other day in some pretty thick brush. And it got me thinking that I need to invest in a brush gun but not sure of a good caliber?

What ya gonna hunt? Something that will eat you, or something with hooves and just wants to stomp and kick your lights out?

30-30 lever gun should get you fixed up. Or go with the 45/70 if you are worried about really large brush critters.

When I think brush gun I think a rifle chambered in 30/30.The Marlin 336 comes to mind.

    A 30-30 would discourage them. A 45-70 would be a better reprimand.

Or even a shotgun with a short barrel and shooting slugs is great.

I'd be more worried about portability. Any decent rifle caliber is

going to perform pretty well at close quarters. A mini-14 would be

good, and a lever carbine would also work.

My personal favorite for close encounters in the short brush

is the good old Mosin M44. Short, powerful, loud, bayonet, club.

It doesn't get any better than that.

What about a Marlin in .308 or .338 Marlin Express?

Why not? The point of a brush gun is ease

of handling in the thicker woods. IMO,

    any dependable carbine will do...

I use a .30-30 because everywhere there is to hunt here is brush.

30-30 rules the roost as a deer rifle and brush gun. Here in ky we can hunt with an ak with the right mag in it, ive been thinking of using one as a brush gun given it has similar ballistics to the 30-30 but most 30-30s you find are probably going to be more accurate then the ak

Another vote for the Marlin 336 in .30-30 or the 1894 in .45-70 if animals larger than deer are expected.

Well, I have to disagree with everyone.:p When I was hunting, I always carried a handgun( 41 mag or larger cal.) for a brush gun, carried in a drop leg holster so that it was out of the way.

You can hunt medium to large game with the versatile .308, with little meat damage to the smaller game. Still strong enough for larger game, which means less chance of having to track down the wounded game.

.30-30 is a very good choice.

With today's saboted slugs, a 12 ga. shotgun with a rifled barrel is probably a better choice for a "brush" gun. No matter what you're sharing the brush with, the 12 ga. will handle it. The only shortcoming is that here in PA and many other states, we are limited to 3 round capacity in a shotgun for hunting purposes.

This is where a semiauto AK crosses over if you own one already. 7.62x39
