So I am mostly new to shotguns. I'm looking for one that reliable, cost effective and an overall good firearm. Any help? Looking for under 700.00 to start if possible.

A mossberg 500/590 our remington 870 would be my suggestion. Both have it's ups and downs both damn reliable and easy to get accessories for. Pick up both see which you like more. both will out livre you if you take care of it.

Mossberg 590A1 12g shotgun. Great, powerful, accurate, and affordable.

The Browning BPS is a nice gun for the money. It may not have quite the "legendary dependability" of Mossburg and Remington, but it's still a strong enough action to last decades of high usage.

I'd grab the BPS Micro. 20ga, 22" vent ribbed barrel. Talk about a do it all shotgun! It's dressed up, too.

The 22" barrel give it carbine like length that's still long enough to play clays with. And whether or not you decide to use it for home defense, because it's only 20ga, you can stay on target more easily because of the lesser recoil. That applies to clays as well.

As far as a hunting gun the best gun for under $700 is the STOEGER m3500 its a 3 1/2" and it reliably cycles everything from 1oz Target loads all the way up th the 2 1/4 oz turkey loads it has the same bolt assembly as the benelli super black eagle.....look it up at stoegerindustries.com

I have a "all around" shotgun that I have had for 43 years. Back in the day when my money was tight, I went to Sears and bought a model 101.7 double barrel shotgun, with a 30 inch barrel. Over the years I used it for hunting deer, rabbit, dove, quail, pheasant, ducks, turkey and home security. I even shot clays and skeet with it. I shot everything from 00 buck to #9 shot. I still have the shotgun and would not sell it for anything. It is still in perfect condition. You just cant go wrong with a double barrel shotgun.

Just came across the mossberg JIC. Does anyone know anything bout it? It looks like the 500 everyone keeps recommending but with extra accessories and a kit of some sort. Is it still a stock 500 or a whole different gun?

The JIC is a pistol grip only package. I'll never have a shotgun in that configuration.

The pistol grip can be replaced by a stock. But if you want it just to shoot. The 590a1 can holds 8 rounds? Also good hd. Gun if a whole gang raids your house...

Generally speaking, I'd have to also say either a Remington

    870, or a Mossberg 500.

Go with the Mossy 590 if you want the extra ammo

capacity, the 500/590 are basically the same gun.

Pistol grips you can acquire and install later, if you so desire.

I don't think the op is that interested in the jic 500 because of the pistol grip.

You can get bayonet mounts that are universal. Normally clamps to the barrel.

How about if we get a shotgun which shoots a bayonet?

    2**,2**,2 things in one!
