Hey guy/gals, Im looken at buyen my first handgun and was wondering what would be a good range gun. Right now im looking at 9mm for price, and was thinking taurus 24/7 or mabe springfield xd. Id like to keep it around 800 max but my bump up if i find somethen that I love. Im a big fan of 1911's but the price tags on some are pushing me away. Any help would be great.

Look hard at the CZ 75 or 75B all steel variant.

I started with a Glock 19. To do it over again I would have bought a Springfield XDm in 9mm.

That said, if it is JUST a range gun, consider a .22lr instead:

    GSG 1911 $350
    Ruger 22/45 Mark III $300

Then buy $500 worth of ammo. Wait, this is an opportunity to make the point.

9mm, Winchester White Box, $35 per 100 rounds means 1400 rounds

    .22lr, Winchester 333, $14 per 333 rounds means 11,655 rounds !!!

With a budget of $800 you have a LOT of options. I CZ-75 is very accurate and low recoil due to the weight and they can be had new for about $600. The XD(m) is a great choice as is the Glock in a 17 or 19 or the Smith and Wesson M&P. All can be had for under $700 easily. Honestly there are too many options within that price range to list them all.

Have you tried any 9mm pistols yet?

If not, I would go to a range and test a few out. If you lived in my neck of the woods (Florida), I'd bring a bunch of mine to the range and let you try them out. It is important that the gun works FOR YOU and not that someone else likes it and thinks the world of it.

I also like the full-sized Berettas like the PX4 Storm full or the 92FS/90-two. They're all far enough under $800 to get Trijicon sights, ammo, a holster, etc. :D

If I was only going to own one gun to do it all it would be a Glock 19. Since you said range gun I'm assuming you're not planning on carrying it. I'd look into a Glock 17 then.

My preference would be a CZ 75b. Sig P226 and Browning Hi-Power are also fine options, the CZ is just a better value in my opinion. They run $500-700 new, depending on the finish. I make these suggestions because for a "range gun", I wouldn't choose a polymer frame. You may feel different, which is fine.

Personally, I wouldn't choose Taurus. Beyond that, almost every polymer option in the $400-800 range is a pretty great gun.

My CZ 75b (top), bought brand new. Added 3 mags (5 total) and wood grips. Total invested: Under $550. [IMG]

For a range gun in 9 mm I would go with the Beretta 92 FS. I never had one problem. But for plain old target shooting a 22 is the way to go.

+6 on the CZ. Though I would look at the CZ85 Combat with adjustable rear sight & overtravel adjustable trigger.
    CZ 85 Combat 9mm 4.7in. DT 2 16RD CZ8591212
Another option is the EAA Witness series. For a range only, I would look at a Witness Match. I recently got coerced into a Witness match .45 by the Evil Gun Shop Guy ;) Very nice gun. So far no downside. Makes a nice bowling pin gun. best part, Single stage match trigger, adjustable sights, etc. for under $600 (+ tax fees etc).
EAA Corp.- European American Armory Corporation
The less exotic versions are an even better deal. There was a Standard black model in the case next to mine with a .22 adapter kit included for $499 (+ tax fees etc.)

I'm sure you could find something way less than $800.00. I saw a used Springfield XD Compact in 9mm for around $375.00 not too long ago. This gun was hardly used and I thought a great price. Don't forget the Ruger lineup. I've got a P-85 that I've had for years and hundreds of rounds through it with absolutely no problems. Happy shopping!

Oh, I forgot the old Ruger pistols! Those make great inexpensive range guns and can be had for about $300 or cheaper if you really look.

This is the one of them: Ruger P95 9mm Blue, w Rail 15 round $300.00 SHIPS FREE
