Yesterday I was doing a once over on my gun and noticed a gap between my receiver rail and my red dot. is this something normal? this is the first time I installed an optic.

If its between the saddle mount and receiver its normal but not between the optic and the mounting rail

I cant get away from the gap either. would this be an incompatibility issue? its the red dot and the rail not a gap between the receiver and rail. it looks like whats causing it is the grove on the fixed side of the clamp on the red dot makes it rise. can i add shims under it?

Not good. The bottom of the Optic mount needs to be in direct contact with the Receiver's rail. The Mount or the rail is warped.

If you are looking directly straight at the front or back of the mount, the mount to rail seat should be level and in contact the whole way. There should be no gap.

Thanks for the diagram. I will call them the V's, they looked flush against the edge of the side of the rail, and the gap looked uniform across. my optic isn't loose, it pretty much looked like the left diagram. Sides looked good just not sitting directly on the rail. I will get pictures tonight. It's at my parents house in a safe, so I don't have access to my gun all the time.

I went to take a picture the other night and my grandpa stopped by my parents. So I told him about the gap. He said as long as the groves of the clamp are tight against the rail, you can end up with a gap inbetween the top of the rail and bottom of the optic. He also said optics fit differently on different types of rails also. So im going to go shoot it and if I have issues then I'm going to a smith.
