It's a Yugo SKS with a scope mount, original stock, muzzle break, bayonet,etc..

it's local and he wants $200 for it. Is that a good deal?

I've never had an SKS, but I remember when they went for $75 years ago.

    Thanks for the help!

Also, what should I look for upon inspection?

    Thanks again!

$200 is a good price anywhere in the Country if it's in nice shape.

    1. Check the bore- I mean REALLY check the bore. Some of the Yugos were not chromed.
    2. Be prepared to repair/ replace the gas valve. Yugos have them to make them single shots when firing grenades. Wealk point- gas erosion will cause valve to fail, and rifle fails to cycle.

If the bore is in good shape an not messed up from using corosive ammo, worth 200 all day long!

Ok, now I'm scared. How much would that cost? If it is not chrome lined should I pass?
    Thanks for the info!!

Brian, just do a good visual inspection of the bore and the throat. Cycle it for function and if it seems okay, it probably is.

Even if worse comes to worst, you should be able to sell it for what you paid.

Offer the gut $150. and see what happens.

You really should go to that link I posted. It will help clear things up.

I looked at it today. The guy was nice enough to strip down and let me inspect all the important parts. I thought it was good to go, so I bought it. :)

Thanks! I'm going to buy some boxes of tulammo at walmart tomorrow. Hopefully I can get out to the range this week. I'm excited to shoot it!

Brian- did not mean to scare you- just to mention two points on the Yugos that crop up regularly. If the rifle has been cleaned, bore should be OK.

Ref: gas valve- other SKS's don't have them- it is there because of the grenade launcher function. If worn, rifle may short cycle- fires, but does not fully eject. Fix costs $15, takes about 2 minutes. Link for you: Collecting and Shooting the Military Surplus Rifle (2006) - Surplusrifle.com

$200 is a steal for a nice Yugo, I mean a steal. Unless I'm mistaken last time I looked folks were willing to pay $400 for a nice Yugo or Russian. That silly scope mount takes away some value esp. if it's attached to the original dust cover.
