Several people on here recommended the book One Second After. I decided to check it out and it hit home especially for me because I am familiar with the setting. Yes, the places in the book are real. (Even the drum beating procession of hippies downtown was an accurate detail.) This book would have really made me think no matter where it took place, but the fact that I've been to all the places in the book really caught me off guard. I had never even heard of an EMP until a few months ago. The book made me think a lot about how unprepared most people are for disasters in general and how few people even know about things like EMPs.

Anyway, today I ate out with a friend for lunch and came across an interesting article on the front page of one of the free newspapers outside the restaurant. It is about the author, Bill Forstchen, talking with a local community about preparing themselves for EMP. And, he made a comment that made me think that your old, broken microwave might be keeping.

I know it sounds great, but it won't work. Microwaves and EMP are two different things. A complete metal seal is required, grounding and insulating the contents from the walls of the cage. An ammo can or a cardboard box covered in alum foil properly done will make an ok Faraday Cage. Microwave ovens will make good storage boxes after an EMP event.
