Just looking to learn a little something about FMC-FLAT ammo. The reason I ask is that when I got my revolver recently, I picked up a pack of inexpensive ammo just to take down to the range, which happened to be FMC-FLAT. I'm curious how it performs in both target shooting and if it is a reasonable self defense round, or whether I should just shoot it off at the range and then get something else. I presume you are referring to Full Metal Case (FMC) Flat point ammo. If so, this is ammo that is totally covered in a copper jacket as opposed to FMJ that generally has an exposed lead base. Performance on targets should be comparable to FMJ with the added benefit of no lead vapors being released from the bullet on firing (the primer is still lead based unless is says NT or lead free).
For defense it would be a poor choice. It would not expand much if any and simply pass through the target transferring little energy and leaving a small wound channel. For defense choose a good HP bullet like the Speer Gold Dot.
