I've been wanting a shotgun in the aresenal for some time. I was walking around at the local gun show and a vendor had a pile of Mossberg shotguns for $199 each. I couldn't resist. I'm now the proud owner of a "Maverick 88" 12 ga which looks almost identical to their 500 series. It's got the 18.5" barrel and came with both a full butt stock and pistol grip. I mostly wanted it as a home defense piece, but the full stock makes it a viable choice for hunting if I ever so decide. Now I just have to find a range that allows shotguns so I can give it a test run.

Congratulations! I have several friends with Maverick shotguns, the nice thing about them is that the barrels will interchange with the 500 series, as will the butt stock and forearm should you ever want to switch them out. For hunting I'd suggest the 24" barrel with screw in chokes, but the 18.5" barrel that's on it should work well for deer using buckshot. I've had a 500 series with the 24" barrel with the screw in chokes for around 20 years now and have had excellent service out of it.

I had an 8 shot 500 issued at a previous agency that I tried to buy when I left. It had the rifle/slug sights and would group almost 1 MOA at 50 yards with Federal's sabot slugs and patterned very well with 00 and 000 buckshot. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer with it with those sabot slugs within 100 yards.

Congrats, they are good guns. Especially at that price point.

Yeah, I don't have a lot of experience with shotguns, but when my dad saw it his first question was "Is it legal to have a barrel that short?" Here with the sudden intrest in home defense shotguns, the 18.5" barrel has almost become the standard. When I switched to the pistol grip, the gun is barely 27" total. It seems tiny, especially next to my only other rifle, a Mosin.
