I just had the pleasure of making it to 18 years old, and decided I'd spend the birthday money I've had for 3 months on a .22. I recently enlisted in the Air Force and am waiting to go in. I know I want either a AK47 or an AR15. But beyond that I have no idea where to start. Any pointers in the right direction?

So do you want a 22lr or an AR/AK type rifle that shoots 22lr?

    S&W M&P 15-22 is well thought of.

Ruger 10-22, Marlin model 60, Henry lever action, Mossberg Tactical Plinkster, CZ bolt action.... Too many choices to list.

I want an AR/AK that shoots 22. I heard good things about CZ. They make an AR?

    S&W M&P 15-22 might be a good choice.

So I'll take a look at the M&P 15 .22. Any suggestions on a good scope?

Imo you dont need a scope.
I red dot or holosight, hell even irons are ok.

If you are set on a scope, leopuld, nikon, bushnell, and many others make excellent optics.

So I guess that's a resounding yes for the S&W. Is the handguard metal or plastic? If plastic can somebody suggest a good metal one? Thanks.

If you want to go inexpensive, yet still good, take a look at ARMSCOR/RIA/Rock Island Armoury...
they've come a LONG way from the 1980's...new CNC machinery a few years ago...
and their new designs for .22lr's are Solid!!

The MAK-22 is their AK variant...
and the MIG-22 is their new M16 variant...where before it was the 1600, which lacked style...

Their 1911 in .22lr or .22TCM is SWEET!!

I am SO impressed with my Ruger 10/22 right out of the box. Took all of 4 shots to sight the scope, and I can get great groupings at 50 and 100 yards all day long. What a great, simple and reliable design. I don't plan to "dress it up" but if I was into that type of thing, the aftermarket accessories ate endless.

Found an M&P online for $430 plus $25 shipping. It's on it's way. Guy at shop wanted $500 for the same thing.

Hey bud, did you get the model with the Magpul furniture on it? I really like my S&W. If you need a good scope, try this one out. It's a 1-4X. So on the 1X, you can use it with both eyes open and the 4X will help with farther shots. It's only $150 and it comes with a scope mount and it is really clear. I picked it up a while back and have had no problems with it.

I also just bought the M&P 15-22, not the MOE but it has the threaded barrel. Bought it from Primary Arms for $450 shipped WITH FREE 10 Pmags! Tell me if it wasn't a good deal.
