What was your first 22 and what have you done with it?


I'm looking for a good 22 for about 100.00 maybe 140.00

My first one was a Stevens model 62/savage model 64 and I picked it up used for a 125 then I sold it to get some money to put a my first deer rifle. Look around you can find a good marlin model 60 in you price range and savages 64 brand new is around 130 I think at least in my neck of the woods

The first .22 I shot was my dad's but it was also the first gun to be given to me as my own. It was a Remington Model 6 (1927) single-shot. It was bought for my dad by his dad (used) in 1941 when he was 9 years old. I first shot it when I was about 6. One of the thrills of my life. I had another thrill/rite of passage about 2 years later when I was allowed to shoot my dad's Remington 550-1 .22 auto. Both guns are stored safely away. The auto gets taken out and shot periodically, and it is still a joy to shoot. The 550 is not hard to find and can be picked up for less then $300 usually even in pretty good shape, but Bill Gates couldn't buy mine.

Marlin 60 got it in 1981. I have recently restored it so I can give it to my son when he is old enough. Great shooting rifle. New ones go for around $150.

My first was a JC Higgins bolt action (Sears rebranded Marlin). Got it when I was 11. Took it to a NRA sponsored marksmanship camp for a week when I was 12. Took it camping and backpacking. Shot crows, rabbits, squirrels and lots of targets, bottles and cans.

It was a Chritmas present from my parents, but I know now that my Brother-in-law was largely responsible for buying it and setting it up, as he was more of a gun buff than my Dad. Don't know where it was picked up, but I know my BIL cut the barrel down to 18.5 inches, recut the crown and chamfered the outer edge of the muzzle. He also full length bedded the action and barrel and worked the trigger to a crisp, clean 3.5 lbs.

I've seen the same model of gun in pawn shops for under $100, but to me mine is priceless due to the thought and involvement that went into making it my first .22, from my family members. Still have it and shoot it pretty regularly. It's handy, and very accurate.

The 22 I was trained on was an old mossberg and sons 46 B (b) bolt action shot everything from shorts to long rifle with a tube style mag, and it had a custom scope mount that my dad made when he got out of the navy. It was my grampa's it was the first rifle my dad shot and my first rifle but the first 22 I bought was a ruger 10-22 I had it for a month or two didn't like it so I gave it to my cousin. Haven't owned a 22 until recently when I bought a mossberg 702 plinkster and I love the thing it was only $130 and it's pretty good for what it is I don't like the stock but it's worked on a few rabbits that where unfortunate enough to pop there head out of the brush.

I'm just a kid now so I have a newer gun for my first. It is a Marlin 795 .22, it's a great shooter. I still have it and still enjoy shooting it. I would recommend it because of the price (I got mine for $139 brand-new) and the durability.

Haha that's funny that's the gun that I decided to get the 795 I'm gunna get one from gander mtn. I already have a 22 range set up for it.

Mid 70's for me. A Marlin semi...probably the same model that is still being sold today. Great gun, easy to use, clean and reasonably accurate within the standards a 22LR is designed and built to be.

My very first .22 was a marlin 60 , I sawed the stock off it made it pistol grip , filed down the firing pin to make it 3 shot burst fire . Refinished it .

Ended up trading it for a car stereo.

Needless to say that was in my less than lawfull younger years.

Christmas 1967, I was eleven, Remington 582. I still have it, in excellent condition.
