I received a envelope yesterday from no other than the ATF, inside was a sheet of paper I've been wanting for a while now. Needless to say I'm a C&R holder now. I'm waiting to send my info to: Century, SOG, J&G Sales, Wideners, Allan's Armory, and others, but I have a question. They all require a signed copy of your license and DL, my question is do I make copies of my license and sign those, or sign the actual copy itself and email a picture of that with the DL. Another thing is, to email my license, do I have to scan it and send that file, or take a picture of it and send that? All advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Make copies of the original and sign those, don't sign the original. Keep it in a secure location.

A scan should work just fine. It might take a little while for vendors to allow you to create an account because it's harder to verify a 03 ffl then a 01. Hope this helps!

Just to be clear, you will need to send them a hard copy (on paper) of your FFL with a "wet" ink signature. (Blue or black) They won't accept emailed or faxed images of that document.

Numrich is another good place to send a copy.
MidwayUSA is NOT. They don't even give (01)FFL's a discount any longer.

NOT TRUE ! In fact , page 1 of the license specifically states that a faxed, scanned, or emailed copy of the signed license is acceptable !!

Thanks all! I was also planning on sending it to Brownells and MidwayUSA, but since Midway doesn't give discounts anymore, I'll just send it to Numrich. I never thought about sending it to them, I deal with them a good bit.

Yes, I'm aware of what it says. Now try and find a distributor that will actually DO that. Just because it's LEGAL for them to accept an electronic copy, it doesn't mean they HAVE to. An FFL can refuse any transaction they want to if they think you looked at them funny.

I'm not sure about a 01 ffl but I know for a fact that most dealers will accept a scan of a 03 ffl.

NO NO NO NO!!!! By all means DO send a copy to Brownells! They still take great care of their customers and appreciate their business. And you'll enjoy the savings you get on most (not all) items. :)

Classic Firearms, Century Arms and J&G Sales. I think that buds guns also accepts it but I'm not 100% sure.

OK then, thank you for that JC. Apparently a number of them have reversed their policies on that since I last sent out a copy years ago. So I stand corrected at this time.

I know that local gun shops around me also used to refuse to accept a C&R FFL for transfers on eligible guns too. You had to fill out a 4473 no matter what. I don't know if that has changed in recent years as well, but I doubt it.

I'm still gonna send Brownells my info, just not Midway. Brownells has some good deals, I get their emails. And I'm very happy that Numrich gives a 10% discount for C&R, I wonder if I could combine that with the free/discounted shipping code you get from calling them?

Well, who do I know that accepts emailed copies.
    1. Century Arms
    2. Atlantic Firearms
    3. Classic Arms
    4. Southern Ohio Gun Distributors
    5. Firearms for Sale.com
    6. Royal Tiger
    7. Aim Surplus
    8. Wideners
    9. Sarco
    10. Samco Global Arms
    11. J&G Sales
Plus a number of Pawnshops that sell on Gunbroker.

And YES , anyone can refuse to do business with anyone, for whatever reason.

Yes well I had accounts with 8 of those places, and back in the day most of them demanded wet ink copies IIRC. But things have changed over the years obviously. Like when Century was selling M44 Mosins 3-fer $150. I'm glad I bought plenty of them when I did. Try getting THAT deal today. :p

Unfortunately the almost seemingly endless supply of C&R firearms no longer exists and I let my license lapse. BHO was another reason I didn't want to be holding a FFL any longer as well, but I digress....

I have to wonder though, what the reason was behind the distributors decision to relax their fears about getting bogus copies of FFL's in their files? Did the BATFE lighten up on the requirements, or did the distributors begin to worry about loosing business because of dwindling C&R holders?

I gotta figure that it was a combination of losing business to the more "internet savvy" competition. I suspect that once they realized that THEY were not responsible for a perfectly executed bogus FFL copy, life got a little better for them. No sense being any more paranoid than the LAW requires. :)

FWIW, yesterday I stopped by my LGS. On the bottom shelf, taken in consignment, was a S&W Safety Hammerless (4th model) in 38 S&W. the trigger return spring is broken. The blued revolver is at about 95% original blue.

That dealer has a copy of my 03 on file. We came to an agreement on price, I handed him the money, he wrote a receipt, bearing the notation "03 C&R FFL on file", and we shook hands. Paperwork DONE.

Gent who was standing there filling out his 4473 looked puzzled, asked "How did you DO that?". Showed him the copy of my 03 that stays in my wallet, explained how it works.

If you have a local dealer that will NOT accept an 03 for a truly eligible gun, he probably does not understand what an 03 IS. Have found a LOT of them that do not understand that there is more than 1 type of FFL. And the price I am willing to pay just got racheted down.

Buying from someone in another state, and they want an 01 FFL to ship TO? Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Typical transfer prices around here are $60-$100. Oh, I DO know some people that are cheaper- but why would I want to pay good money that I do not NEED to pay?

    Your business, your choice.

Indeed. There was one local dealer that I began dealing with a long, long time ago. They were my "go to shop" for a lot of years and I was one of their regulars who spent a good portion of their paycheck there every other week. One day I walked in wanting to purchase a new AR-15. The owner told me "You don't want one of those things - You need a new shotgun!". So I walked out and bought the AR at another shop instead.

Then one day I got my first C&R license......

I walked into his shop with a fresh copy in hand, and presented it to the shop owner asking him if he would keep it on file. He promptly shoved it back at me and said "I don't want that", and began ranting and raving and walked to the back of the store slinging insults along the way. I bought a lot of guns, accessories, and reloading equipment & supplies from that place. Thousands of hard earned dollars. I never set foot in the place again.

The only reason I could think of for that kind of reaction was that he thought I was out to cheat him out of a bunch of money somehow buy buying eligible guns from other sources.

You are lucky to have people to deal with that have their heads screwed on straight C3..... savor it.
