It doesn't have to be the most accurate or the least expensive or the best for any given category. What is your favorite rifle round and why?

I choose the .223 because I'm not a hunter just a target shooter, I have found it to be surprisingly accurate for factory rounds, inexpensive and has very little recoil so my shoulder doesn't care if I shoot 100 rounds in a day.

.30-06 is my favorite. It was the caliber of a borrowed rifle that I used for my first deer hunt and has held a sentimental place ever since.

If we get a second choice, it would be 45/70 Government. I had an 1895 Marlin and a Marlin 1895 SS and really enjoyed shooting them. For a somewhat shorter range round, it gets the job done with authority.

30/06 is my choice because of it's versatility, however; I'm starting to really like my .308!!

As a dyed in the wool whitetail deer hunter, my all time favorite rifle cartridge is the 7mm08. EXTREMELY accurate, very mild recoiling, easy to reload for, it performs all out of proportion of what it's modest size would appear to indicate. I've dropped deer out to 420 yards with it DRT (dead right in tracks). With the right bullets it is well up to the task for smaller or bigger game as well.

For its all around versatility I like the .308Win. If I was confined to one caliber it would be .308Win.

But the .280Rem is not far behind, and the .300WinMag does things that are down right impressive.

So I suppose a "Top 5" would make my choice a bit easier.

    1.) .308Win.
    2.) .280Rem
    3.) .223
    4.) .30-06
    5.) .300WinMag

And, yes, I know there are overlapping capabilities in my choices.

+1 on the .308 Win - for versatility

But with no criteria other than what I enjoy shooting...

    1 - .338 Lapua Mag
    2 - .50 BMG / .300 Win Mag
    3 - .308 Win
    4 - .223/5.56
    5 - Tie .260 Rem & 7.62x39mm

    ;)

I still like the 30-30. No particular reason, but it was one of the earliest rounds I fired as a kid, and I can hit anything I can see with it. Also love the .308 and the 30-06.

My favorite rifle round is one that goes BOOM when I pull the trigger. I like them all, really I do.

But the one that hold a special place in my hear is the 220 Swift. Still the fastest 22 cal centerfire on the market. The swift was what my first varmint rifle was chambered in. It was a nice Ruger M77 VT with a jewell trigger set to 6 oz and topped with a weaver (El Paso) v6 I think a 6-18x scope it shot like no one business if a varmint showed its face within 400 yards I could kill it.

I really don't have a favorite, but I guess it would have to be the caliber of the rifle I am shooting at any given time. I guess for the all-a-round fun factor, it would have to be the little .22 long rifle, as I have countless pistols and rifles to choose from for any given day of shooting....

Tomorrow we celebrate God's creation of His Own rifle cartridge: " And on that day of October 15, 1906, the Lord created the 30-06 and He declared it the best cartridge ever...."

My vote would go to the .308 as well. Amazing accuracy in the right actions, readily available, fairly inexpensive, all things that are important to me. .22 mag would be a close 2nd.

The .30-06 is the MOST versatile cartridge ever made, and therefore is the BEST. It will take care of just about any N. American game animal, and it worked fine during both World Wars in the '03 Springfield, the M1 Garand, and Browning 30 cal 1919 machinegun.

.375 H&H. Takes any animal in North America and Africa. Pleasant to shoot. Not expensive to feed.

i like .30-06. it can take down any animal that i would be hunting and has a lot of history. the one hunting rifle i have is in .30-06.

at the same time, the .223 and the 7.62x39 are nice little rounds too. (but maybe that's just because the guns that fire them are so fun to shoot at the range)

.22lr is a pretty good one too, given the inexpensive price and the huge variety of guns that fire it.

My favorite is the .308 cause that's what my M1As shoot, then second is .30-06 cause that's what my M1s and 03s shoot.

    I like my 7mm STW.
Its flat shooting, hard hitting, accurate.
It also burns way too much powder and has pretty stout recoil without a muzzle brake.
With the brake it kicks like a 243,but the muzzle blast will wreck (unprotected) hearing, strip the paint off your truck and kill your lawn.;)
Even with these downsides, it never fails to put a smile on my face whenever I shoot it.

The 35 whelen I recently bought is much more sensible and is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

You just can't have one favorite caliber, unless you only shoot that one caliber rifle/rifles.

    My favorites are:
    22LR
    22WMR
    223/5.56
    30/06
    300 Winchester Magnum
    38/357 Magnum
    44 Magnum
    45 Colt

I have rifles in all these calibers, and they are all favorites to shoot. It just depends on what I want to shoot at,and what caliber I want to shoot it with!

.270 Win. but I'm also a big fan of the old 7.62x54R Soviet round and the 8x57 Mauser, both of which predate the .30-06 with similar ballistics.

The lower the ammo costs (and the more availability), the more fun.

    My calibers are .22 lr, 7.62x39, x54R and .303.
Based on the cost/availability and power to blast bricks, the x39.
