What's everyone's favorite lever action caliber? I'm probably looking on the smaller end but open to anything reliable/fun/safe.

By safe I mean a round that is suitable to lever action by default and that I don't have to purchase specific types of ammo for.

I have a marlin in 38special/357 mag and it's fun as hell to shoot.. And if you have a revolver in that caliber you prob already have some ammo for it..

By default, that would be bottle necks like 25-20, 32-20, 38-40, 44-40, 30-30. Straight walled cases are a little more temperamental especially when using two different cartridges like .38 and .357. Many will chamber one length fine but have problems with the other. My personal favorite is the 44-40 but everybody needs a 30-30.

357 in a pistol caliber carbine and 35 Remington in a rifle cartridge. I had a Marlin 336T carbine in 35 Remington and I never should have sold it. I got talked into higher power rifles and have had many but there was not a game animal I killed that could not have been killed with the 35 Remington. My longest shot was on an elk at 70 yards with a 270. Deer were taken from 5 yards to 30 yards. Moose was 25 yards. Current lever is a BLR in 308 with a receiver sight. I no longer hunt so I dont know why I keep it except it is purty.

    45-70.

prolly the most versatile lever gun round.

can be load stiff enough for elephant and light enough to mimic pistol rounds. the current marlins work well with the 45-70 round.

bottle necks and most pistol caliber you have to be careful what bullets your using and be sure they are either ballistic tip or flat point. all 45-70 are safe for levergun use in modern rifles.

the current marlin 1895 are about as strong as a 45-70 can be

Jon, The 45-70 can be loaded hot but not as hot as the Ruger #1 and #3. I had a #3 and a Marlin and the loading data is different. The Ruger max is about 200 fps below a 458 Win Mag. The Marlin max is about 200 fps below the Ruger loads.

.444 Marlin, because I used to own one and gained it's respect. It's not all that practical but it's a good caliber.

I have a Winchester 94 in .44 mag it holds 11 rounds and is a great brush (short range) gun! It's the second one I have owned and deeply regret selling the first one that I bought from Wally's world for $69.95

I'll be the odd man out and say 450 Marlin, it is alot of fun if you don't mind a little kick, pretty easy to handload for too.

I will go along with others. The .30-30 is accurate and easy to shoot and reload. A pre64 94 in good condition is my choice. They broke in and stole mine many years ago. I now have one in .32 special. Not much difference.

no real particular favorites. if it can be stuffed into a lever action rifle, i'll shoot it!:D

but everyone should own at least one lever action in 30-30!:p

honestly only shot a lever in 30-30 and 357.

and i love both for different reasons. :D

30-30.... "real" rifle round with easy/moderate recoil in a light, handy rifle. great plinking round for fun, but expensive for that purpose. could hunt anything in my neck of the woods with it.

38/357...shoots soft, like a loud 22 imo. use 38's for reasonably priced plinking. pair w/ a fave revolver.

pick what suits your needs best, but both are great imo.

i still need to add a couple of lever actions in 44 Magnum and 357 Magnum to compliment my revolvers.

something cool about having a rifle and pistol in the same caliber.

plus, i'm still searching for a Winchester Model 94 in 32 Win. Spl. to add into my collection.
