I just got my first single action revolver,a Ruger single six,and while I was target practicing,I decided to try the old hammer fan that you see in the movies, and guess what,it worked just as the movies show.My question is,even though I don't plan on doing it very often,if at all anymore-could it damage the gun?It is un practical anyways, but is it going to cause damage?

YES it WILL damage your revolver over time. I would advise against it.

Fanning is for the movies. Shoot your SA as it's intended, and it will last a life-time.

+1. Fanning will cause accellerated wear to some internal parts. There were some gunsmiths doing some mods to allow fanning for SASS quick draw competition.

Good to know... Not that I would try it with my 44mag. It's just got too much kick for fanning.
