I have a Springfield XD9 4" barrel with 16 round magazines. I can fit 17 rounds into my magazines -- a tight fit but not too difficult to do. Is this OK, or does it create the potential for problems down the line?

Probably not a good idea. I can fit 6 quarts of oil in my truck that calls for 5 quarts. That does not mean it is a good idea.

I have never seen this actually done with the correct ammo. Is this a factory mag? You sure you don't have a .40 mag for your 9mm pistol or something like that? Just wondering out loud....

Because if it's designed for X and you can put X plus one in there, I would say something is wrong - to be honest.

I have an XDSC 9 and with the extended mag there is no earthly way you could get 17rds in there. i'd check the mag for markings and make sure it is in fact a 9mm mag.

I could be mistaken on this but I seem to remember something about the 9 mags being slightly different then the 357 sig/40 mags. I touch thinner if I remember correctly but I could be wrong.

I have never found any quality hi cap mags that will allow you to squeze in an extra round. Something isn't right, either a cheap mag or possibly a 40 cal mag. I can't speak about Springfield but I know that I can fit a 40 cal mag in my Ruger P series 9mm and vice versa. I put a red line on my 40 cal mags so they don't get mixed up as they look the same as the 9mm mags.

I don't know about your pistol mags but for my little marlin .22 i can fit 8 even though the box said seven. I think its a bad idea because it could cause a jam if you overload it (at least it did in mine) and it could screw with the spring. Not much good can really come of it, as JD said if its supposed to fit X and it doesn't fit X then there is something wrong with them probably.

You have to put them in horizontally. :D

Check your mag, I have heard that you can do that with a 40 cal. mag. One of the guys got the 9mm coversion for his 40 cal. and he loaded up those mags with 9mm. Had lots of feeding problems though. Check the XD talk forum for more details.
