I think it's a bit more likely that, after creating a 500 year calendar, the Mayans figured it was far enough out to stop making more additions. They had to stop somewhere. If the calendar went 600 years instead, people would be predicting end of the world in 2112 instead.
Funny how they could predict our end but couldn't see their own end.
But do we know that for sure? Maybe they just didn't want to leave a record?
The mayan calender ends like our calender ends. It doesn't. Its a cyclic calender as ours is. What we will witness is the end of a "long cycle", which is like 6000 years long, or somewhere around there. Kind of how we have milleniums. Some peoples world will end in 2012, through their own stupidity. But not through some dead civiliations divine intervention.
Or, that last edition was made just before the Spaniards showed up...I'm just sayin'.
