what is the purpose of the small spring the extends from the lower receiver when you replace the end plate on an AR?

    is it necessary?

where can you buy a replacement and what is it's actual name?

    thank you

It keeps your rear take down pin from vibrating out. W/O it your recievers will seperate and pivot on the front take down pin.

Are you also missing the take down detent? The detent spring is #11 on the parts list. If you don't have the detent that is #12

Look Here Del-Ton, Inc. AR-15 Lower Parts - Standard

Don't feel too bad, I've launched several into low orbit! Ken

Don't you just love it when those little springs fly out,and are never to be found again in a room in your house.
I don't think there's a person on earth that has assembled or worked on an AR,that can say they haven't ever lost a few springs and detent pins!
