I want the get a rifle, but I am uncertain as to which caliber. I would like to get a .338 win.

I see that Mossberg has rifles rather cheap in the .338. But, I heard about Mossbergs blowing up. I called Mossberg and they did not deny it either, but they claim the 4X4 with function fine.

Does anyone have a 4X4; if so how do you like it?

I know you get what you pay for. But, Mossberg is known for making decent shotguns, maybe their rifles are of better quality now?

Do not have a Mossberg 4x4, but have a dozen older Mossbergs. The company has been around a LOOOONG time, and makes good guns. As far as "blowing up", have seen several blown up rifles and shotguns, assorted makes, calibers, and guages- 99.9% caused by problems with "operator headspace"- Um... That is what is in the space in between the earplugs. Screwups have included wrong ammo, obstructed bore, improperly assembled weapon, etc. In today's lawyer filled society, any company that has a weapon noted for "blowing up" will shortly be in bankruptcy after a jury (defined as 12 people not smart enough to get out of jury duty) starts handing out multi-million dollar PUNITIVE damage awards.

I've NEVER heard of any Mossberg "blowing up". The ATR is a very good rifle for the price, same as all Mossbergs, except for the new crop of cheap .22's made in China. You might want to check the articles in the American Rifleman and Shooting Times. Both did a review when the ATR came out and gave it good grades.

Mossberg 4x4 rilfes

I bought two rifles chambered in 7 mm Mag for my two younger sons for christmass, after running a few boxes of shell through them now, I can honestly say, I would say, get you one, they both shot 3/4 inch at a hundred yards groups right out of the box when we sighted them in on a fairly windy day, I was more than impressed, they seem to be well made and very little slop in the actions, Triggers had just a slight creap but could be probably tuned up a little, over all a very nice looking rife for the money.

That was my impression of the one I saw in a gun shop. I would have bought it but he was asking $379 = about $100 more than it sells for in WalMart.

Ran across this forum while looking for some info on the Mossberg 4x4 and thought I'd make a comment. I have one. Marinecote bbl., synthetic vented stock and shinny scope. Came as a package deal from Gander Mountain. I gave about $400 for it last summer. After sighting in from a rest and shooting 40 rds. off hand, I settled down to shoot groups. At 100 yds. 3 shots under 7/8 inch. at 200 yds. 3 shots under 1 1/2 inch with two touching. I killed a nice Newfoundland moose last fall at 216 yds. (range finder) with a Federal Premium Vital-Shok 180 gr. Barnes TSX bullet. One shot, one kill as the Rangers say. He took a couple steps and folded up. I like to take a backpack for my junk and warm coat and have a rifle case attached to my packframe so the rifle ride just behind my spine but on the outside of the pack frame. The skeleton stock makes grabbing the rifle and lifting up and out a breeze. I like the balance and fit. I'm trying to find extra magazines, if anyone knows of a source. Costumer service at Mossberg can't seem to help. Probably to soon.
