If you can legally carry concealed, is there ever a reason to open carry?

There is a recent incident in my state where are CCW permitted person open carried, (also very legal), and excited people at a public event. No law violations, but lots of complaints to public officials.

Some folks here may know what I am referring to, and I do not want to debate or question the individual's decisions at the time.

While I would hope more open carrying would make it more acceptable, it seems in doing so could create a threat to the CCW rights.

    Am I missing something?

Tactically it is a poor decision to open carry when you could CCW. But if it legal it shouldn't be an issue other than perceptions.
I never ever tell anyone I am carrying (my close friends know I do, but so are they). Keep them guessing, cause once its out there the escalation of force will have only one way to go. My 2c.

The other side of the 2 cents are those of us who feel it doesn't matter and that maybe it is a tactical advantage to open carry. The gun is usually more easily drawn and if a bad guy sees right away that you are carrying, unless he has a death wish, he will probably choose a different target.

Or he could just target you first to take out the "threat of resistance". Or, if the bad guy has an accomplice, he would possibly do the same.

Either way, if you are open carrying, you give up the element of surprise. Many armed bad guys enter the situation with their guns concealed, survey the scene a little, assess the danger, and then commit their act. If every armed "bystander" was openly carrying, the bad guy has a tactical advantage. He has chosen his target(s) before he comes out in the open and exposed his intentions.

Maintain an element of surprise and you have a tremendous advantage in any confrontation.

Do you have any documentation to back up this assumption?

Criminals who commit armed robberies are cowards by nature. Interviews done by the FBI suggest that the presence of an openly carried weapon by a legally armed civillian is a deterent to a crime at that location. The criminal will look for an easier target.

If open carry was so awful, why do all uniformed police and security personel carry openly? Where is their element of "surprise"?

They're uniformed. What's the point of concealing?

In NC there's no law that specifically prohibits open carry, but the LE and sheeple frown upon it. I choose not to, not to scare the sheeple, but to keep the BG guessing. I want the element of surprise to be on my side. If I'm open carrying, he can scope out where my gun is, what type of holster, what type of retension my holster has. Trying to see how easy it would be to disarm me. Let him take his chances when I CC.

Let me preface this by saying that I have no problems with concealed carry, but I do have problems with some of the arguments of those who oppose open carry (not saying that you oppose).

I think the "surprise benefit" that many anti-OCers use is bogus. Would you rather have the element of surprise in drawing on a BG, or would you rather never have to draw because the BG (being cowardly by nature) chose to go someplace else?

I'll admit, that I'm an activist (this isn't for everyone) and I have very strong opinions (of course they are like a$$holes, everyone's got one).

I want everyone who is legally able, to carry a firearm for defense. How better to let people know that they, too, can carry? How better to let people know that not everyone that carries a gun is a raving lunatic or law enforcement?

If open carry isn't right for you, great, but carry that damn gun! Never leave that firearm at home.

First- let me say I don't drink. At all. Diabetic. However, law here does not permit a CCW holder to carry concealed in any establishment that serves alcohol. So if I am taking my lady out to eat at the local restaurant, which DOES serve beer, it is not legal to carry- CONCEALED. So either leave it in car, or take jacket off before entering. 2 in S&W revolver, blued, black holster, dark pants, rarely noticed. Legal, and owner does not object. A number of LEOs off duty eat there, and not uncommon to see one that has taken jacket off. Nobody gets in an uproar.

Have to say I agree completely with Glock30Owner .

First just standing on principal , the Founders didn't considered making law abiding citizens jump through hoops with "Training classes" and Licenses and fees left and right made for a Right to Keep and Bear Arms , Please they could have created such things if it was their intent of the Amendment .

Second this nonsense that an armed person has to be either A) a cop , B) a Soldier or , C) a Criminal is total BS and nothing more than thought control through a life of Sociali$t conditioning .

People love to go on and on about the surprise effect being so great but what about the old Peace by Superior Armament and firepower "Whatever that is" Tell me honestly that when you're in a Cabelas , BassPro or even Walmarts sporting goods section when they're busy you think you're the only person who would open carry if allowed to do so ?

What do you think a Criminals reaction will be when he goes into a Mall that has a popular gun/sporting goods store and he see's dozens of men and women all "Heeled" as the love to say in the movies .

Do you think he's going to be thinking how glad he and his one partner are to know who to target or do you think perhaps they'll be thinking it's time to get the hell out of there and go look for a softer "Target" ?

The latter would be my guess .

All forcing CCW only is doing is playing into the hands of those that live by ignorance and insist that guns are bad like some kind of sick Porno .

    This

    I really love .

You know what I couldn't give a rats rear end what they frown on .

I frown on paying taxes that employ the LEO's and the judges and the jailers and the Politicians that create useless laws or don't enforce the good ones and allowed our streets to have filled up with the millions of criminal scum that it has .

Catch and convict a Child/Sex offenders/molesters and they send the trash to jail for just a few years and then allow them back out to do it again and dare to call their creation of the Sex offenders lists a Victory for children's and womens safety . Order LEO's to NOT enforce our immigrations laws and allow millions of criminals in our country or the LEO's that just ignore an obvious illegal when they haven't been given such an order .

Calling serving as little as 5-7 years a Life Sentence for convicted murders .

Same nonsense with Rapists won't keep them in jail but hey let's make sure every community has enough Rape crisis counselors for the future victims we know there will be with their soft on crime stance .

If they didn't want people to demand their Rights then they never should have allowed the problems to escalate as they have the last several decades .

Interesting discussion, in my state, PA, open carry is legal, but not often exercised. I am of the opinion, if the general public got used to seeing the general public with a firearm, the paranoia would ease.

The real question is how to transition from concealed carry to open carry. Another of my beliefs is if the general public knew how many folks are walking about with a handgun, they would flip.

The other part of the equation is the fact that the 'honestly armed' probably provide an unseen service to everyone. The bad guys have to hope, guess, gamble, or pray the next victim won't be capable of self preservation. The more that are, providing proof via open or concealed carry, the tougher life gets as a bad guy.

More often than not I do CCW but I do occasionally open carry. It is legal in my State with a carry permit. With that said, I do have to deal with the occasional uninformed Liberal chicken **** that calls law enforcement. Luckily I know 99% of the LEO's in my town and all are advocates of our 2nd amendment rights. When the LEO's show up they attempt to educate the individual and I try to move on with a positive attitude concerning the situation. Frustrating...

I think we would all be surprized to see how many concealed carriers are out there.

never see it in NY.. but my buddy does CCW, has a little gun in his pocket.. never knew till he pulled it out to show me... so i'm betting every person knows atleast ONE person that CCW's... i'm sure if there was a day that every CCW person had 2 wear a bright orange hat, there'd be a lot of orange around... makes me feel safer, im not 21, but when i get to be, i am getting my permit.

You can't just post something like that with out details. Please tell us how open carrying saved your friend's life. I'm sure many people would be interested in that.

There is a good chance that Texas will go with open carry in 2009.

Our Gov. and his constituents are pro-gun. Even though I am licensed to CCW, I haven't decided "if" I would actually open carry regularly... I sort of enjoy the stealth of CCW.

When you consider that: there are 6.7 guns for every man. woman, & child in the USA, there is a good chance that at least one in twelve CCW. Unfortunately, there are some illegal CCW's out there too. The good news is, that crimes committed by Legal CCW's is less than 1/10th of 1%. At least in Texas anyway.

Now, your friend (the one that showed you his gun) technically broke the law, even "if" he is a legal CCW. He could lose his license for simply showing his weapon to you, or anyone else for that matter.
