Well, i picked up a Remington 7400 30-06 with a Pentax scope as my 1st rifle about 1 month ago, getting used to it now, but was wondering if i made a good choice for my 1st rifle, i've had fun with my S&W .40 pistol and wanted to get into rifles. What do you guys think? should i have gone with a diff rifle/ Cal? using it for Deer. thanks all

Good gun that will serve you well. There isn't any game in North America that your gun isn't suitable for. Practice as much as you can and you will have it made.

If you are ANYTHING like the rest of us, you will not be a single rifle owner for long:)

I don`t want to rain on your rifle selection however both the rem 742 and the 7400 semi-auto`s suffer from a wondering zero. I owned a 742 and could not get a decent group. At the range, I noticed people with the 7400 had the same problem. A one inch group or less is always a good objective at 100 yards. The caliber you bought should be good enough for anyone. I prefer a bolt action for hunting. Lever or single shoot actions are also good.

Good luck with your new rifle,

    patret

I still have my 742 that I bought while at UGA back in 1978. Although my wife has pretty much taken it over now.
