Just got started on a new Ar build. So far I have a Alexander manufacturing striped lower and a cmmg lpk. I have no idea what I won't to do with it. So I'm asking for some input. If you were building a Ar what would you use. Something in the back of my head is telling me to build it for long range. Any recommendation on parts and caliber?

I guessing this is your first AR? I only guess that because most second AR builds have a plan. Like really specific, stuff that didn't make it onto the first one.

Are you going to hunt with it? 3 gun? defense? all of the above? I'd say nail down what its intended use will be, then we can start bombarding you with opinions :D

Not my first AR but it is my first build. It's probably going to be for those pesky zombies at 1000 yards.

The slow ones that shuffle around or the ones that can run? Makes a difference at that distance! :D

6.5 Grendel if you reload. 1000 yards is doable with .223, but you'll probably have to make a lot of sacrifices.

I think I am going to go with the Grendel. Dose anyone know what the best barrel, bcg, and trigger would be for this set up?

6.5 Grendel or .264 LBC are effectually the same, with minor differences and pretty much interchangeable. Look for both.

Do you reload? Factory ammo is hard to find and expensive.

BTw the only thing different between them and a standard AR15 is barrel, bolt and magazine.

    Everything else is standard.

I would look into reloading if you are going with A Grendel. Ammo cost is about $1.00 per round. As far as for zombies, I'd build something lightweight. If there ever was a zombie invasion, the extra pound or two will make a difference in fatigue. I'd stick with .223/5.56 purely because of cost of the Grendel round.

I'm definitely going to reload for it. I already have AR's in 5.56. The way I see it is I can only shoot one at a time so why not build something different.

I don't think you'll have much luck "thinning the herd" at 1200 yards with a 5.56 Nato or .223 remy. I've heard people doing it with bolt action precision builds with 90 grain VLDs. Those won't even fit in the mags of an AR15, but maybe you can drop them into the chamber every shot.

The very nice wind bucking ballistic coefficient of the 6.5 bullets lends itself to being very consistent at longer ranges.

I've been looking at a Black Hole Weaponry 20" barrel, Rifle gas .750 gas block. If you want even better performance for 800 + yards perhaps a 24" or bull barrel might suit you better, BHW will do it for you. BHW customer service is awesome, and they will do custom work for you (ie custom fluting and gas port sizing) . I've called them multiple times and have been very satisfied with the answers I got from them. My local range only goes to 600 yards so I won't be shooting 1000 yards anytime soon. But it'd be pretty cool having an ar15 going 1000+ yards with a 5 second upper swap. The only drawback is that you will have to wait for it. I believe their lead times are a couple months or so.

I for one look forward to your new endeavor!

Keep us in the loop! and plz plz plz don't forget the porn.

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely keep everyone in the loop. I guess I will finish up the lower first. Anyone know who has good buffer kits for a 1,000+ yard 6.5.

From what I understand, a standard rifle or carbine buffer is fine.

Are going with a rifle or carbine/collapseable stock?

Yea. I'm just going to make sure it's mil spec. I can't think of the name of It but I think magpul makes a stock with adjustable cheek rest. I might go with that or something similar. The gun will definitely be rifle length.

I'm with you on the timney. Is 1:9 a good twist rate for a 1000 yard 6.5. I was thinking 1:12 would be better but this is my first build so idk. I would also like it to be chrome lined and threaded.

. Has anyone looked at Faxon Firearms ARAK21 for an upper. I'm thinking of a build in 300BO with them, but don't know much about the upper. I'm a fan of piston instead of gas, so that part is attractive. Not sure of the final weight either. Will probably cut it down and make it a SBR with a suppressor. Thoughts t
